The Kannapolis Intimidators (25-12) squeaked by the Asheville Tourists 2-1 Monday night at the historic McCormick Field in Asheville, N.C., scoring two runs in the ninth inning with two outs to steal Game 3 of the four-game series.
In the top of ninth, the Intimidators were down to their last strike with Luis Gonzalez at the plate, as the center fielder hit a dribbler in front of the plate, as catcher Austin Bernard scooped it up and threw a wild throw to first. The throwing error allowed Nolan Brown, who pinch ran for Carlos Perez, to score all the way from second base, tying the game, 1-1. Next up for the I's, Laz Rivera smacked a groundball through the right side, as manager Justin Jirschele waved in Frost from second base to give the Intimidators a 2-1 advantage.
The Intimidators' leaned on starter Lincoln Henzman to keep them in the ball game throughout the night, as the converted Louisville Cardinal closer only allowed one run in 5.2 innings on the bump, striking out a season-high eight batters, while scattering six hits. The one run for Asheville came in the second, as Ramon Marcelino smacked the first pitch of his at-bat to center, giving the struggling Tourists a 1-0 lead.
Throughout the game, Kannapolis applied pressure to Asheville and their starter Garrett Schilling, but the righty continued to leave runners on base in almost every inning, striking out five I's along the way through 7.0 innings.
Although it has been a rather tough season for the hard-throwing righty, Yosmer Solorzano (W, 1-3) picked up four strikeouts through 2.1 innings on the mound for Kannapolis, as Tyler Johnson (S, 6) closed the door with two strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth to pick up win No.25 for Kannapolis.
