Asheville Tourists News Release

CHARLESTON, SC-- Saturday night's game between the Asheville Tourists and the Charleston RiverDogs can be explained by the first inning. Asheville put runners at first and second with no outs. Shane Hoelscher crushed a pitch deep down the left field line with Home Run distance. The ball hooked foul and the Tourists ended up without a run, only a missed opportunity. Charleston came to the plate and not only plated three, they knocked Asheville's starting pitcher Sam Howard from the game.

Howard allowed back-to-back singles to begin the frame, but struck out the next two RiverDogs. A double-steal that involved a botched rundown led to Charleston's first run of the inning. Austin Aune made it 2-0 with a triple to deep center. Alexander Palma singled in Aune and after Howard walked Bo Thompson the lefty's day was done.

Asheville's bullpen did a nice job the rest of the way. The RiverDogs struck for three more in the fourth inning where two Tourists errors led to most of the damage. Offensively, Asheville had chances in the second and third innings but came away empty handed. They did not record a hit after Hoelscher's third-inning double.

The Tourists did manage an unearned run in the eighth on Forrest Wall's RBI groundout. Jerry Vasto, Shane Halley, and Scott Firth all notched scoreless outings for Asheville with Halley's appearance lasting two innings.

Jorge Mateo led the way for the home team. The short-stop put together a 4-for-5 performance at the plate and stole two bases. Matt Wotherspoon took the win by firing six shutout innings. Despite the 6-1 loss, Asheville still leads the season series against Charleston 7-6 and has an opportunity to win the current series with the rubber match scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
