Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
GREENSBORO, N.C. (June 20, 2015) - Catcher Brett Austin smashed his team-leading fifth triple, a bases-clearing line drive in the sixth inning, to lead the Intimidators past the Grasshoppers, 4-0, on Saturday night at Greensboro's NewBridge Bank Park. Kannapolis (34-34) can finish the First Half of the season over .500 with a win on Sunday.
Intimidators starter Zach Thompson spearheaded the shutout, retiring the first 11 batters he faced before Greensboro's Arturo Rodriguez worked a 12-pitch at-bat to collect the Grasshoppers' first hit. Thompson (2-1) spun five scoreless innings, striking out four batters while allowing just three hits en route to the win. Brad Salgado followed with three scoreless innings, and Matt Cooper tossed a perfect ninth to close the game.
Kannapolis rallied for four runs, all with two outs, in the top of the sixth. Nick Delmonico started it off with a two-out single, and after Louie Lechich was hit by a pitch, Alexander Simon gave the Intimidators a 1-0 lead with a base hit to left field. Nick Basto singled to load the bases for Austin, who belted a line drive down the right-field line to clear the bases with his team-leading fifth triple for a 4-0 lead.
Greensboro starter Jorge Cavanerio (0-3) kept Kannapolis off the board for the first five innings before getting into trouble in the sixth. He finished with six strikeouts and a walk in a losing effort.
The Intimidators wrap up the First Half of the season on Sunday in Greensboro at 4 p.m. as RHP Spencer Adams (2-4, 3.93 ERA) take the mound for Kannapolis against the Grasshoppers RHP Tyler Kolek (4-2, 4.42 ERA). Following next week's All-Star Break, Kannapolis returns to action with a nine-game home stand beginning June 25 featuring another Thirsty Thursday at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System.
