Augusta GreenJackets News Release

AUGUSTA, GA: Saturday night's SAL League contest between the Augusta GreenJackets (33-35) and the visiting Savannah Sand Gnats (37-31) was delayed thirty minutes due to rain. The only two people at Lake Olmstead Stadium that seemed to be not distracted by the time delay was starting pitchers Mark Reyes (2-3) and Ricky Capp (2-0). Reyes and Capp were in a zone the entire night on the hill. Both pitchers threw for at least seven innings. Capp ended up edging out Reyes in the pitching due to give the Sand Gants the victory with a score of one to zero.

First baseman Adrian Abreu recorded the first hit with a single to right field. After a Jonathan Johnson walk, Luis Guilorme hit a single to load the bases for the Sand Gnats with only one out. The GreenJackets all-star pitcher Mark Reyes has proven to get himself out of trouble several times this season. Thus far in the 2015, batters are hitting .000 for average with the bases loaded while Reyes is on the mound. After an unassisted ground out to first baseman Sklyer Ewing and forcing Eudor Garcia to strike out swing, Reyes is still holding batters to that same average. More importantly Reyes held the Sand Gnats off for another inning on the scoreboard.

Two errors in the top of the fifth inning cost the GreenJackets a run and the lead. The first error on the night occurred when shortstop Jeremy Sy mishandled a ball hit to him by Arian Abreu. With two outs Luis Gillmore singled to left field and a fielding error by Andrew Cain allowed Abreu to make his way all the way to home from first base. The Sand Gnats took the lead in the game with a score of one to zero.

The GreenJackets tried to answer the Sand Gnats score in the bottom half of the fifth inning. After a Skyler Ewing walk to lead off the inning Dylan Davis hit a shot that was about three feet away from clearing the center field wall for a double. With zero outs the GreenJackets had the tying and go ahead run in scoring positions. The heat was on in Augusta for Sand Gnats pitcher Ricky Knapp and just as he cooled down the GreenJackets crowd just as he did all night. The next three batters Knapp faced were retired to end the fifth inning and the scoring threat.

In the eighth inning the GreenJackets were threatening again to tie the game with the bases loaded and two outs. Jonah Arenado stepped to the plate, Arenado who is hitting .280 on the year and leading the GreenJackets with 35 RBIs grounded out second baseman Jonathan Johnson to end the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth inning David Roseboom took to the hill and struck side out to secure the night's victory for the Sand Gnats. The final scoreboard line would read zero runs, five hits, and two errors for the Augusta GreenJackets (33-35) and one run, seven hits, and zero errors for the Savannah Sand Gnats. Mark Reyes (2-3) takes home his third loss of the season after pitching seven impressive innings, allowing five hits, and one unearned run. Ricky Kapp improves to 2-0 on the season after his seven and two-thirds pitching performance. David Roseboom collects his eighth save of 2015.

Tomorrow early evening the GreenJackets and Sand Gnats will take the field one last time at Lake Olmstead Stadium before the All-Star break. Sam Coonrood (4-1 ERA 2.51) and Casey Meisner (6-2 ERA 2.15) are both schedule to pitch on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled at 5:05pm and the gates will be opened at 4:00pm.
