Tortugas Fall, 4-3, in 11 Innings Tuesday

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - Grenny Cumana's RBI single to right field gave Clearwater a 4-3 victory over the Daytona Tortugas in 11 innings Tuesday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Clearwater tied the game in the seventh inning before scoring the winning run in extra's to improve to 5-0 in the second half.

For the fifth straight game, the Tortugas allowed their opponents to score first. Adam Haseley led off the top of the third with a triple to center and came in to score on a fielding error from RHP Tony Santillan.

Yet, Daytona would tie the game up in the bottom half. After RHP Adonis Medina struck out the first two Tortugas of the inning, Tyler Stephenson hit a solo home run to right field to tie the score at one.

The Tortugas took their first lead of the night in the fifth. Hector Vargas began the inning with a double, followed by a Daniel Sweet walk. Randy Ventura then singled home Vargas for a 2-1 lead. Stephenson matched it a batter later with a base hit to put Daytona up 3-1. Ibandel Isabel then walk to load up the bases, but LHP Jakob Hernandez struck out Mitch Nay and Stuart Fairchild to end the threat.

The Threshers would tie the game up in the seventh. After RHP Brian Hunter got Haseley to pop out to start the inning, he allowed back-to-back singles to Henri Lartigue and Jose Pujols, putting the tying run at first. Both runners would move up 90-feet on a wild pitch, then come in to score on a Mickey Moniak single to center to tie the game at three.

The game would remain tied until the 11th. Raul Rivas pinch-ran and became the placed runner at second base. Grenny Cumana followed with a one-out single to right field, allowing Rivas to score on a Ventura bobble in right field.

Fairchild was the placed runner for the Tortugas in the bottom of the eleventh, but Daytona was unable to get him in against LHP Aaron Brown.

LHP Kyle Dohy (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn his first victory. Hendrix (3-3) took the loss, allowing the game-winning run to score in the eleventh. Brown earned his fourth save of the year, pitching a scoreless bottom of the eleventh with a strikeout.

The Tortugas continue the series Wednesday morning with RHP Tejay Antone (1-1, 3.90 ERA) making the start, his first at The Jack since 8/25/16. He will be opposed by RHP Alejandro Requena (0-1, 7.88 ERA) for the Threshers.

First pitch Wednesday is scheduled for 10:35 AM, with coverage beginning at 10:20 AM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.

NOTES: The Tortugas are now 3-5 in extra inning games and 0-3 in 11-inning games... Daytona matched a season high by striking out 18 times, both times against Clearwater. The first was at Spectrum Field on 5/11... Daniel Sweet went 0-for-5 with a career-high five strikeouts. It is the second time a Tortugas hitter has struck out five times in a game (Malik Collymore, 4/29)... Ibandel Isabel struck out three times tonight. He has struck out multiple times in six straight games... Tyler Stephenson homered for the first time since 6/11. He now has eight multi-RBI games, the second most on Daytona... Stuart Fairchild and Brantley Bell were both hit-by-a pitch in the second inning. It was the second straight game multiple Tortugas were hit, and the ninth time this season.
