June 26, 2018 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Clearwater Threshers News Release
The Clearwater Threshers earned their fifth consecutive win, outlasting the Daytona Tortguas to take the series opener, 4-3 in 11 innings at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Jose Pujols and Grenny Cumana each finished with three hits, as the Threshers (5-0) (37-36) eclipsed the .500 mark for the first time this season, and remain undefeated in the second half.
Clearwater took the lead in the third inning, after Adam Haseley tripled to center off Tony Santillan. Henri Lartigue then reached on a fielding error by Santillan, allowing Haseley to score to put the Threshers up, 1-0.
Daytona (3-2) (40-31) pulled even in the bottom half. With two down, Tyler Stephenson homered to right off Adonis Medina to bring the teams even at one apiece.
The Tortguas took the lead two innings later, after Hector Vargas opened the inning with a double, and Daniel Sweet walked. Randy Ventura then singled to right, scoring Vargas to put Daytona ahead.
Jakob Hernandez took over and struck out Bruce Yari, but Stephenson singled to center to bring home Sweet and make it 3-1. It was just the second inherited runner permitted by Hernandez all season, as the lefty has stranded 18 of 20.
Clearwater rallied back in the seventh.
With one down, Lartigue and Pujols collected back-to-back singles. After a wild pitch advanced them to second and third, Mickey Moniak lined a single to center to plate both runners and tie the game at three.
The tie held into the 11th. Raul Rivas entered as a pinch runner at second to start the inning, and with one out, Cumana lined a single to right to bring home Rivas with the go-ahead run.
Kyle Dohy (1-0) earned the win in relief, hurling two hitless innings and striking out three. Aaron Brown finished it off, working a perfect bottom of the 11th to earn his fourth save.
Game two of the series will take place on Wednesday morning, with first pitch at 10:35 a.m.
