Anderson's Quality Start Not Enough in Series-Opening Loss
June 26, 2018 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Florida Fire Frogs News Release
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Ian Anderson tossed his second consecutive quality start, but the Florida Fire Frogs' offense continued to search for answers in a 5-1 loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays to open up a three-game series at Osceola County Stadium on Tuesday night. Florida's bats have averaged just 2.5 runs-per-game since the All-Star break, leading to a 2-6 record.
Anderson (1-5) started the night with three scoreless frames before yielding a run in the fourth. The 20-year-old allowed a single to Kevin Smith to start the inning, then recorded consecutive outs on grounders to second to move the runner to third. The starter jammed Kacy Clemens, but the opposing first baseman muscled a single through the hole on the right side to bring home Smith for the first run of the game.
Florida (1-4, 30-41) responded with a run of its own in the bottom half. Garrison Schwartz (2x4, R, 2B) starting things off with a double to the gap in left-center, and reached third on Kurt Hoekstra's (0x4) ground out to first. With Ray-Patrick Didder (0x2, BB) at the plate, Zach Logue (3-1) uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Schwartz to walk home and tie the game.
Dunedin (1-4, 32-41) broke the tie in the sixth without the benefit of an RBI. Eduard Pinto singled to lead off the inning. After a strikeout to Smith, David Jacob singled and Riley Adams walked to load the bases for Clemens. Anderson unwound a wild pitch off of Brett Cumberland, sending Pinto to the plate to give the visitors their second one-run advantage of the night.
Anderson lasted six innings in the series opener, allowing two runs on six hits, three walks and six strikeouts. The Fire Frogs fell to 2-12 in games in which the Atlanta Braves' fifth-ranked prospect takes the mound.
The Blue Jays padded on with a run against Thomas Burrows in a 40-pitch seventh inning. The Toronto Blue Jays' affiliate put the game out of reach with a two-run hoe run from Alberto Mineo against Dan Lietz in the ninth.
The Fire Frogs will look to even the series up at a game apiece in game two of the three-game set at Osceola County Stadium on Wednesday morning. LHP Joey Wentz (1-2, 3.34) takes the mound for Florida against Dunedin's LHP Angel Perdomo (1-4, 3.42). First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., with coverage starting at 10:45 a.m.with the Florida Fire Frogs Pre-game Show on the Florida Fire Frogs Broadcasting Network.
