TAMPA, Fla. - Jorge Polanco homered, but the Tampa Tarpons used a 15-hit attack to take the series opener over the Miracle, 10-3, on Tuesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
It was the first time the Miracle have allowed double digit runs in a game this season. Tampa scored an unearned run in the first inning, before Polanco tied the game with a deep solo home run to right to open the third.
The Tarpons added two in the bottom of the third and never looked back. Down 3-1 in the fourth, the Miracle crept back within a run. Taylor Grzelakowski led off with a double and Luis Arraez drove him in with an RBI single. Tampa, however, scored three more in the bottom of the frame to pad its lead.
Polanco reached four times with his home run, a single, and two walks. Miguel Sano also reached base four times with two singles and two walks. He delivered an RBI single in the sixth inning.
Kyle Holder led the way for Tampa with three hits, a walk, and five RBI. The Tarpons went 7-for-20 with runners in scoring position, while the Miracle were 2-for-11 and left the bases loaded twice.
Tyler Watson (0-1) suffered the loss for Fort Myers. The left-hander started and allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits in three innings. He walked two and struck out four. Brian Trieglaff (1-0) picked up the win for Tampa with two scoreless innings in relief.
Phillip Diehl tossed the final two innings for the Tarpons and struck out all six Miracle hitters he faced.
