Arkansas Travelers News Release

TULSA, OKLAHOMA - Alex Torres and two relievers combined on a three-hitter as the Arkansas Travelers opened their four-game series at Tulsa with a 6-0 victory over the Drillers on Tuesday night. Torres (W, 3-1) was dominating during a six-inning performance striking out eight batters and giving up just two base hits, three walks and one hit batter. Peter Bourjos and Hank Conger each drove in two runs, while Mark Trumbo singled twice and scored three runs.

The win brings the Travs within 5.5 games of the Drillers for the Texas League North Division lead. The number of combined wins by Tulsa and losses by the Travs that would eliminate Arkansas from contention remains at 9.

A total of 12 Drillers batters struck out including four by Fernando Rodriguez over two shutout innings. Bobby Cassevah closed out the club's seventh shutout by pitching around two walks in the ninth. In just his fifth start at double A, Torres quickly established a rhythm and earned his 13th win of the season counting time spent at Rancho Cucamonga. He threw 59 strikes out of 89 pitches and left five runners on base.

The 21-year old Torres was threatened early in the game as the Drillers got runners to second and third with two outs on a walk and a two-out double by Mike McKenry. Torres left them on base with a strikeout of Cole Garner and began a string of ten straight outs.

The Travs put together a solid rally in the fourth inning against Chaz Roe (L, 7-3) as Trumbo hit a leadoff single then advanced to third base on a hit-and-run single by Conger. Brian Walker, starting behind the plate, recorded his second base hit, a hard grounder through the right side of the infield, and gave the Travs a 1-0 lead. Then Ivan Contreras drew a two-out walk to load the bases for Bourjos, and he singled up the middle to drive in two runs for a 3-0 Travs lead.

Trumbo sliced a single to right field with one out in the fifth inning and scored when Conger ripped an RBI double into the gap in right field for a 4-0 lead.

After striking out the side on 12 pitches in the fourth, Torres hit Jeff Kindel to begin the inning then got Daniel Carte to fly to right field. Brad Corley then singled to move Kindel to second base. With Rex Rundgren batting, Walker picked Corley off first base. Torres followed by catching Rundgren looking, his eighth strikeout, to leave Kindel on the bases.

Alberto Alburquerque relieved Roe for the seventh inning and allowed a leadoff single to Sutton then threw wildly on a pickoff attempt sending Sutton to second base. A deep fly out by Trumbo advanced Sutton to third and a groundout by Conger scored him for a 5-0 lead.

Three Drillers batters went down on strikes to Rodriguez in the bottom of the eighth, then the Travs stretched their lead to 6-0 against Shane Lindsey. With two outs, Trumbo and Conger drew walks followed by a run-scoring single from Ryan Mount.

Time of game was 2:48 and the paid attendance was 6,518.

Tim Kiely (4-2, 5.03) is scheduled to pitch on Wednesday night for the Travelers. Tulsa is planning to send Ching-Lung Lo (0-1, 5.87) to the mound at 7:05 p.m.
