Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Collin DeLome belted a walk-off solo home run off Jared Lansford with one out in the ninth to give Corpus Christi a 6-5 triumph over Midland Wednesday at Whataburger Field before 5,867.
The Hooks improved to 26-32 in the second half of Texas League action while snapping a four-game losing streak. Midland stands 34-24.
DeLome's single plated Wladimir Sutil (lead-off double) for a 5-4 Corpus Christi lead two innings earlier, but the RockHounds drew even off closer Evan Englebrook (2-0) in the top of the final frame. With runners at first and third and two gone, Englebrook was unsuccessful in cleanly fielding a sharp grounder off the bat of Corey Wimberly. The miscue enabled Corey Brown to score.
Wimberly drew third-inning blood for Midland. He opened with a single to left, advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw and completed the circuit on consecutive ground outs by Josh Horton and Josh Donaldson.
The Hooks answered right away when Jonathan Fixler's seventh home run - a first-pitch, lead-off shot - clanged off the left-field foul pole. Two outs later, Drew Locke lofted an RBI triple to deep right-center for a 2-1 advantage.
With Jason Castro aboard via a base on balls, Jimmy Van Ostrand drove his 15th homer of 2009 to the back side of the left-field berm for a 4-1 Corpus Christi lead through six.
Van Ostrand has 10 home runs and 34 runs batted in vs. Midland this season.
Midland finally broke through against Hooks starter Sergio Perez in the seventh. The RockHounds knotted things at 4 on Shane Peterson's solo bomb into the Midland bullpen, an RBI ground out by Matt Sulentic and Wimberly's single. Archie Gilbert and Brown scored after reaching on an error and walking, respectively.
Perez permitted an earned run on six hits while striking out four. Sixty-two of his 94 pitches were strikes. Counterpart Travis Banwart lasted 5 1/3 and was responsible for seven hits, two walks and five strikeouts.
Lansford dropped to 1-2.
Lefty Tyler Lumsden (1-2) takes the mound for Corpus Christi Thursday at 7:05 against Kyle Middleton (3-1).
