Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON - Juan Torres crushed a pair of home runs and drove in a career high five, as Savannah beat the RiverDogs, 10-5, in front of 4,784 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Friday night.

Savannah won its fourth in a row and 12th in 15 efforts in improving to a Southern Division best 27-14, 66-44 overall, while Charleston lost its fourth in a row and 10th in 11 games in dropping to 16-25, 42-69 overall.

Savannah stormed out of the gate scoring five two-out runs off Charleston's Jose Ramirez in the first in seizing a 5-0 lead. Aderlin Rodriguez blooped a two-run single to centerfield, while Torres drilled his first home run of the campaign - a three-run clout - inside the left-field foul pole.

Charleston barked back in the bottom half, trimming the deficit to 5-2 off Savannah's Adam Kolarek. Kyle Higashioka contributed a RBI groundout, while Kelvin De Leon laced a two-out RBI single to left field.

Wilfredo Tovar clocked a sacrifice fly in the second inning to score Alonzo Harris, who doubled to start the inning, pushing Savannah's lead to 6-2.

The run scoring continued in the bottom of the second via a two-out RBI single by Anderson Feliz, as the RiverDogs clawed back to 6-3.

Runs came in for the fifth straight half-inning, as Savannah registered a three-run third for a 9-3 lead. Torres plopped a RBI double inside the left-field line, Luis Nieves added a bloop RBI single to centerfield, and Harris drove in a run courtesy of a Charleston fielding error.

Once again, the RiverDogs battled back to score a pair of two-out runs to chase Kolarek from the contest. De Leon doubled, Jose Mojica walked, and Garrison Lassiter lined a RBI double to left-centerfield making the count 9-4. Jeff Farnham laced a RBI single to right field and put the score at 9-5.

In his first career start, Kolarek worked just 2.2 innings, permitting five runs on six hits while walking three and fanning one.

Ramirez (5-6) also did not work into the fourth, going a season-low 3.0 innings, while giving up a season-high nine runs on eight runs with two walks and two strikeouts.

Torres came calling again clobbering his second home run of the game off the left-field foul pole for a 10-5 Savannah lead. The call was disputed by RiverDogs manager Aaron Ledesma, resulting in his ejection.

Following the top of the sixth inning, the game was halted by a 27-minute rain delay.

Charleston could not keep its early offensive momentum going against the Savannah bullpen, going scoreless over the last 6.0 innings. Gabriel Zavala (3-5) worked 1.1 innings, Chase Huchingson tossed shutout ball over 3.0 innings, while Ronny Morla finished up the victory with flawless eighth and ninth innings.

Game two of the series, set for Saturday at 7:05 p.m., features Charleston southpaw Vidal Nuno (0-0, 2.25 ERA) battling Savannah lefty Angel Cuan (9-1, 3.00 ERA), who ranks in the top five in the circuit in both victories and ERA.
