Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Kannapolis Intimidators rallied for four runs in the eighth inning for a 5-2 comeback win over the Delmarva Shorebirds on Friday at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
The Intimidators scored four runs off reliever Tim Adelman, highlighted by Dan Black's two-run triple to claim the lead in the eighth. The comeback squandered a strong outing from Shorebirds starter Matt Bywater, who allowed one unearned run over seven innings with a career-high eight strikeouts and no walks.
Jake Wilson struck out the final two batters, each representing the tying run at the plate, to end the game for his ninth save of the season. Steve Upchurch (4-9) worked three relief innings, allowing a run on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts for the win. It was Upchurch's second win in two relief appearances since returning to the bullpen July 31.
Trailing 2-1, Kannapolis appeared to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth before Delmarva's left fielder Jeremy Nowak made the defensive play of the game to rob Trayce Thompson of a two-run home run. With two outs and a runner on first, Thompson crushed a ball to left field where Nowak timed his jump perfectly and reached over the wall to take away a go-ahead home run.
In the first inning, Dan Black singled the first pitch from Bywater into left field to drive home Carlos Sanchez putting Kannapolis on the board first. Delmarva tied the game when Michael Ohlman scored on a Jon Bachanov wild pitch in the top of the second inning.
Joe Oliveira's sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth gave Delmarva a 2-1 lead.
Kannapolis starter Jon Bachanov pitched a career-high 4.0 innings, allowing a run on four hits with two strikeouts, and Reid Kelly worked a scoreless inning of relief in his first appearance since coming off the disabled list this week.
Kannapolis and Delmarva play the second game of this four-game series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. For ticket information, call the box office at (704) 932-3267 or visit www.IntimidatorsBaseball.com.
