Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Mike Kickham delivered seven strong innings for the Augusta GreenJackets and his offense wasn't too shabby either - supporting him to the tune of six runs on 13 hits as the GreenJackets picked up a 6-2 win in their series opener with the Rome Braves on Friday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
In his longest start of the year, Kickham (3-7) fired seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three. It's the second win for Kickham in his last four starts.
The GreenJackets took an early lead on the third of three straight singles in the first as Josh Mazzola's base hit made it 1-0. The lead held until the fifth when Kickham surrendered a two-out triple to David Rohm. With an 0-2 count on the next hitter, Kickham uncorked a wild pitch to allow Rohm to score the tying run.
Augusta broke the game open with a three-run third as Ryan Scoma's RBI single on a 3-2 count plated the go-ahead run. With two on and two outs, Rafael Rodriguez singled to right on a ball that was misplayed by Rohm to allow a pair of runs to score and give the GreenJackets a 4-1 edge.
Rome got a run back off Kickham in the seventh on a one-out solo homer by Evan Gattis to cut Augusta's lead to two. Mazzola singled home his second run of the game in the seventh to push the lead back to three while Devin Harris hit a solo home run in the eighth - his first since June 17th and his tenth of the year - to give the GreenJackets a 6-2 lead.
Seth Rosin and Brett Bochy slammed the door shut out of the GreenJackets bullpen, allowing one hit in two scoreless innings to seal the win for Kickham. Chasen Shreve (4-5) allowed three runs - two earned - in the sixth inning on three hits and a walk to take the loss for the Braves.
The GreenJackets will look to make it two in a row against the Braves on Saturday with Ryan Bradley (1-1, 4.53) facing off against Carlos Perez (4-7, 4.78) in a matchup of lefties. Any fan who brings a new school supply to the ballpark for the remainder of the current series will receive a FREE general admission ticket to that night's game courtesy of the GreenJackets and Knology as part of their Back to School drive.
