Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV- After playing one season in Toledo, Zack Torquato gave his former teammates an unpleasant welcome to WesBanco Arena. At the 23-second mark of overtime, Torquato knocked in the rebound of Chris Barton's initial shot, lifting the Wheeling Nailers to a 3-2 victory over the Walleye.

After a scoreless first period, the Walleye opened the scoring at the 6:55 mark of the second. Joey Martin entered on the left side of the offensive zone, and slid a pass across to Paul Zanette, who drilled a one-timer into the back of the cage from the right circle. With 8:46 remaining in the middle frame, the Nailers drew even, capitalizing on a bad line change by Toledo. Mickael Bedard led Matt Lombardi into the right circle, prior to Lombardi snapping a wrist shot high on the stick side of Rob Nolan.

Midway through the third period, Toledo regained the lead, courtesy of a hard bounce off of the end wall. Paul Zanette fired a shot wide from the right side of the ice, and the rebound bounced out to Joey Martin, who was able to slip the puck through two Wheeling defenders and in. However, that lead was short-lived, as the Nailers tied the score just 28 seconds later. Zack Torquato sent a pass across to Peter Lenes, who buried a shot from the bottom of the right circle, lighting the lamp in his first game with the home team.

The game remained tied into overtime, and in the extra session, Wheeling wasted little time in giving the game a verdict. Chris Barton rushed the puck forward, but had his shot blocked. However, the blocked shot deflected right to Zack Torquato, who scored glove side to defeat his former team, lifting the Nailers to a 3-2 victory.

Peter Delmas earned the win for Wheeling, making 24 saves on 26 shots, defeating Rob Nolan took the overtime loss for Toledo, stopping 29 of the 32 shots he faced.

The Nailers and Walleye will face each other once again on Friday night, with that game taking place at Huntington Center at 7:00. Wheeling's next home game takes place on Sunday at 4:00, when they play host to the Cincinnati Cyclones.
