Toros Start the Season with a Win Over The Vipers 93-82

AUSTIN, Texas Nov. 27- First round draft pick Alonzo Gee led the Austin Toros to a 93-82 victory over the Rio Grande Valley Vipers opening night at the Austin Convention Center. Gee finished with 24 points and seven rebounds on the night.

"It was a good way to get the season started," said Coach Snyder. "There are things we can improve on, but we had some outstanding individual performances and overall we defended well as a team."

The Toros got off to a rough start after the Vipers started the game with an 8-0 run before Coach Snyder called a time out two minutes into the first quarter. Gee scored the Toros first bucket shortly after. Curtis Jerrells led scoring with eight points at the end of the first quarter as the Toros took the lead 22-18.

The Toros continued strong in the second quarter leading 31-26 before the Vipers went on another 8-0 run led by Antonio Anderson who scored six of eight.

The Toros were able to hold off the Vipers at half time with a one point lead at 43-42 after Jerrells calmly hit both free throws with three seconds on the clock. The Toros scored 14 points off of the Vipers 14 first-half turnovers.

The Toros jumped out to a quick 58-48 lead mid-way through the third quarter. Russell Carter led the Toros in scoring for the quarter with seven points, and Jerrells added five more. Both teams battled foul trouble, with Gee getting his fourth at the 7:29 mark and four Vipers players having more than three fouls at the end of the quarter. The Toros finished strong, and led 68-59 going into the fourth quarter.

Lewis Clinch helped secure the Toros win after a big steal that led to a dunk with 1:12 left in the fourth quarter.

Jerrells finished perfect at the line making all 12 free throws and had 18 points throughout the game. Dwayne Jones claimed the team's first double-double of the season with 12 rebounds and 11 points.

Joey Dorsey on assignment from the Houston Rockets grabbed 15 rebounds and had seven points for the night. Two Vipers scored in double figures, as Anderson led the Vipers with 28 points and Michael Harris finished the night with 20 points.

The Toros and Vipers meet again Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Austin Convention Center.
