Rio Grande Valley Vipers News Release
AUSTIN, Texas- Despite a 28 point effort from Antonio Anderson, and a strong effort on the boards, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers dropped their season opener to the Austin Toros 93-82 Friday night at the Austin Convention Center. The Vipers out-rebounded the Toros 48-39 and dished out 13 team assists, but lost the turnover battle 24-13 which contributed to falling on the short side of the scoring ledger.
Fouls and free throws were also a story in the game again tonight. The Vipers committed 29 personal fouls, which led to 36 Austin free throw attempts of which they converted 28. The Vipers meanwhile, shot 26 free throws but made just 15.
The game was back and fourth with both teams holding leads of at least eight points, the game was also tied four times.
The Vipers started the game strong as they scored the game's first eight points, capped off by a Mike Harris transition dunk prompting a time-out from Toro Head Coach Quin Snyder. Following the time-out, Austin outscored RGV 24-10 for the remainder of the quarter to take a 24-18 lead into the second quarter.
Rio Grande Valley struggled to chip away at the Toros lead in the second half, Austin outscored RGV in each of the final two quarters to earn the win. Lewis Clinch scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half to lead the offensive charge for Austin.
Austin was led by their 2009 D-League First round pick Alonzo Gee who scored a team high 24 points while hauling in seven rebounds in the Toro victory. Dwayne Jones continued his strong play against Rio Grande Valley which dates back to last season as the Toro center scored 11 points, bringing down 12 boards and swatting two Viper shots.
