Toros Fall to Thunderbirds in Double Overtime Thriller

Austin, TX - The Austin Toros fell to the New Mexico Thunderbirds 119-117 in a double overtime time game Saturday night at Cedar Park Center. Aubrey Coleman recorded a season high 28 points and led the Toros in scoring.

The Thunderbirds started strong, out-rebounding the Toros 16-9 in the first quarter as they took an early lead. In a quarter that saw four lead changes and five ties, the Thunderbirds managed to end the first quarter ahead 33-26. Aubrey Coleman caught fire early in the second and made key field goals that helped the Toros cut the Thunderbirds lead down to two. The Toros trailed the Thunderbirds 61-56 at halftime.

The Thunderbirds maintained their lead throughout the third quarter by shooting 53 percent from the field and 33 percent from beyond the arc, ending the third ahead 89-83. The fourth quarter quickly became a back and forth battle leaving fans on the edge of their seats as the Toros tied the game with a little less than 9 minutes to play. Aubrey Coleman continued his stellar performance late in the fourth hitting a crucial three-pointer and free throw with less than 1:30 to play.

With 27.9 seconds, Coleman forced a loose ball that Lyons recovered, but a shot by Marcus Cousin was rejected and the Toros were forced to foul. Josh Bostic made one of two free throws to put the Thunderbirds ahead by two. Leo Lyons inbounded the ball to Lance Thomas with 7.9 seconds on the clock and Thomas scored on a soaring lay-up to send the game into overtime, tying the score 109-109.

The Thunderbirds struck first in overtime, but the Toros quickly answered with a Lyons 15 foot jumper. The Toros took their first lead since the first quarter after Lyons made two free throws with 1:11 left to play in the extra period bringing the score to 113-111. Dar Tucker of the Thunderbirds tied the score on a running jumper with 3.8 seconds left. The Toros had the final possession but were unable to convert, sending the game into its second overtime period. With 8.8 seconds left in the second overtime, Lance Thomas made two clutch free throws that tied the game at 117. The Thunderbirds regained the lead after Abdulai Jalloh made two free throws with 2.4 seconds left. The Toros had the final possession but were unable to tie the game.

Leo Lyons who scored 24 points and six rebounds followed Coleman's 28 points and five rebounds to round out the Toros leader board. Shane Edwards of the Thunderbirds led all scorers with 29 points and added eleven rebounds to record a double-double. Jamine Peterson also contributed 28 points and five rebounds to the Thunderbirds scoring total.

The Austin Toros (15-21) will face off with the Texas Legends Wednesday March 2 and Thursday March 3 at Cedar Park Center at 7:30 p.m. The New Mexico Thunderbirds (15-22) will play the Bakersfield Jam in New Mexico Wednesday, March 2.
