Thunderbirds Win Double Overtime Thriller

Cedar Park, TX - The New Mexico Thunderbirds (15-22) needed two overtimes on Saturday night to snap a seven-game losing streak and beat the Austin Toros (15-21) 119-117.

Shane Edwards scored 29 points and Jamine Peterson had 28 points to lead the Thunderbirds to the victory.

In the first quarter, with the Thunderbirds up by two points, they went on a 12-2 run to take a 31-19 lead. Led by Edwards who had 11 points in the quarter, the T-Birds would hold a 33-26 lead after one quarter.

The Toros used an 11-0 second quarter run to cut the lead down to just one point with 5:38 remaining in the half. Peterson scored nine points in the second quarter for the T-Birds including two 3-pointers and helped them open the lead back up to five points at the half, 61-56.

Peterson hit a free throw with 8:42 to go in the quarter that put the T-Birds up 70-63. The Thunderbirds then went scoreless for the next three and a half minutes and Austin tied up the game at 70-70. The Thunderbirds then hit seven of their next nine shots in the quarter and led 89-83 heading into the fourth.

The Toros used a quick 8-2 run at the start of the fourth quarter to tie up the game. With just 7.3 seconds left the Thunderbirds led by two points, 109-107. Lance Thomas then hit a running bank shot with 1.3 seconds left in regulation to tie up the game and send it to overtime.

In the first overtime, the Toros were up by two points with less than 10 seconds to go. Dar Tucker then sent the game to a second overtime by hitting a jump shot with 3.9 seconds remaining.

Edwards started the second overtime by giving the T-Birds the early lead with a layup. Then after Cousin tied up the game for Austin, Peterson hit a layup with 1:02 remaining that put the T-Birds up by two points. With 8.8 seconds to go, Thomas was fouled by Marcus Hubbard and hit two free throws to tie up the game. Abdulai Jalloh then answered by hitting two free throws of his own to give the T-Birds the lead for good.

The T-Birds will return home for the first time in nearly a month when they take on the Bakersfield Jam on Wednesday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. for Defined Fitness Night with a J.R. Giddens basketball card and T-Bird's Magnet giveaway. The T-Birds March Giveaway Madness will then continue on Friday, March 11 with Susan G. Komen for the Cure Night with a Thundercat Sticker giveaway.

On Saturday, March 12 the Thunderbirds will be hosting Hispanic Heritage Night sponsors by Univision and Premier Distributing Company. The T-Birds will be donating $4 of every ticket purchased to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. The night will include a postgame concert featuring the National Institute of Flamenco, Kymberlee Ann Lopez and Sorela. All fans will also have the opportunity to win Lakers tickets, a Taos Ski Valley Vacation, an Angel Fire Deluxe Ski Vacation and a VIP Package to Ty Murray Invitational.
