Toronto FC News Release
TORONTO - Toronto FC, Major League Soccer (MLS) and Liga MX announced today the matchup for the historic inaugural edition of Campeones Cup, an annual event pitting the reigning champions of Liga MX and MLS to crown the best club in North America.
The 2018 Campeones Cup will be hosted by Toronto FC, the reigning MLS Cup champion, on September 19, 2018 at 8:30 p.m. ET at BMO Field in Toronto. Liga MX's representative will be Tigres UANL, decided this past weekend at the Campeón de Campeones matchup between the Mexican League's two tournament champions, in which Tigres, the Apertura champions, defeated Santos Laguna, Clausura champions, by 4-0. Led by French striker André-Pierre Gignac, Tigres played two matches against TFC in the Quarterfinals of the Concacaf Champions League in March of this year, with Toronto ultimately going through and on their way to a historic run to the Final.
"This will be a fun rematch for us after an exciting series with Tigres in the Champions League," said Toronto FC President Bill Manning. "We believe that the Campeones Cup has the potential to become an important competition between MLS and Liga MX and are happy to host the first one at BMO Field."
The 2018 Campeones Cup is the inaugural edition of the yearly event that is part of a larger multi-year collaboration between MLS and Liga MX, designed to bring fans together from the U.S., Mexico and Canada in a show of unity while fueling a rivalry between two of the world's most competitive soccer leagues.
Tickets are on sale now to Toronto FC Members (Friday, July 20th) as part of an exclusive pre-sale offering. Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Thursday, July 26th at 3pm via www.Ticketmaster.ca. Fans are urged to purchase tickets early in order to ensure the best seats for what is sure to be an exciting clash between the champions of both leagues.
The partnership between leagues will include a sharing of best business practices and a collaboration around social responsibility efforts to drive positive social change. An intense rivalry on the field will be a true partnership off the field. More information regarding the joint social responsibility program will be announced as it becomes available.
