Worcester Tornadoes News Release

WORCESTER - Despite two valiant comebacks, the Worcester Tornadoes dropped both ends of a doubleheader, 11-4 and 10-8, to the New Jersey Jackals on Tuesday evening at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

In both games, New Jersey scored five runs in the first inning and in both contests, Worcester (19-11) battled back to within one (5-4 in Game One and 6-5 in Game Two). Also in both, the Jackals answered right back with four runs to retake the five-run advantage.

Francisco Caraballo led Worcester's offense in Game Two with a 2-for-4 effort, the only player with multiple hits. Marcus Sanders was hit by a Junior Guerrero pitch to lead off the game while Matt Lauderdale and Luke Allen followed with singles to score Sanders. Juan Tejada and Vic Davilla then hit back-to-back home runs for the 5-0 lead.

Worcester fought back, scoring five of the game's next six runs to pull within one at 6-5. Alex Trezza's second home run of the doubleheader, a solo shot in the second inning, made it 5-1. New Jersey answered right back in the third when Tejada blasted his second home run of the game and third in as many at bats (dating back to Game One) to make it 6-1.

The key to a four-run third inning outburst came from Caraballo who tripled in Scott Grimes and Trezza to make it 6-3. Chuck Jeroloman followed with an RBI groundout and Omar Pena proceeded with a solo home run to center field to make it 6-5.

Sanders used smart base running to give the Jackals the 7-5 advantage in the fourth inning. After doubling down the left field line, he took third on a groundout and scored when a wild pitch barely eluded Trezza. Two walks and a single loaded the bases while Andrew Larsen cleared them for the 10-5 lead.

The Tornadoes got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Chris Colabello scorched an RBI single, scoring B.J. Weed. Worcester made it 10-8 with two runs in the sixth. Mike MacMillan singled, Josh Farkes walked, and Weed singled, scoring one. Grimes followed with a 4-3 RBI groundout to pull within two, the final runs of Game Two.

In Game One, the Tornadoes cut a 5-0 deficit to 5-4, but New Jersey responded with six-consecutive runs to run away with the 11-4 victory. Grimes (3-for-4) and Weed (2-for-4) finished with five of the team's nine hits while Trezza drove in two runs with his fourth home run of the season.

After Matt Weagle recorded the first two outs in the first inning, the next six reached base with five crossing the plate. With two on, Davilla's rocket to first got under the glove of Colabello. The error scored the first two runs of the game, opening the floodgates for a big inning. Andrew Larsen followed with an RBI single and Craig Maddox hit a two-run shot to right-center field for the 5-0 score.

Worcester chipped away at the lead, scoring once in the first and three more in the third to pull within one at 5-4. Colabello gave the Tornadoes their first run with a sacrifice fly to deep center, scoring Weed who led off with a single. Two innings later, Colabello drove in another run with a single to center. Trezza followed with a long two-run home run which hit the football scoreboard in deep right field.

New Jersey added four runs in the fourth to make it 9-4, converting three hits and two walks into four runs. The big blow came from Davilla who hit a bases-clearing double down the right field line to score three. Larsen followed with his second RBI single of the game, scoring Davilla.

The scoring was closed out in the sixth when Tejada hit a monster two-run home run down the left field line, plating Allen who reached via his third hit of the game.

Worcester continues its series with New Jersey on Wednesday in a 6:05 p.m. start. Eddie Pena takes the hill for the Tornadoes.
