
Jackals earn sweep

Worcester, MA - 1B Juan Tejeda hit home runs in three consecutive at bats as the New Jersey Jackals swept a doubleheader on the road against the Worcester Tornadoes by scores of 11-4 and 10-8 at Hanover Insurance Park on Tuesday night. I n game one, the Jackals posted five two-out runs in the top of the first inning following a 47-minute rain delay. A two-run double by 3B Vic Davilla scored DH Luke Allen and Tejeda to give New Jersey a 2-0 lead. After an RBI single by LF Andrew Larsen made it 3-0, C Craig Maddox's fourth home run of the season gave the Jackals a 5-0 advantage before the Tornadoes even came to the plate.
In the bottom of the first, Worcester cut the lead to 5-1 when CF BJ Weed crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by 1B Chris Colabello. In the bottom of the third inning, the Tornadoes plated three runs to pull within one at 5-4. After a one-out double by RF Scott Grimes, a Colabello single cut the Worcester deficit to 5-2. The next batter, C Alex Trezza, connected for his fourth home run of the season to cut the Jackals lead to one. That was as close as the Tornadoes got. New Jersey put the game away with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Davilla ripped a Matt Weagle pitch down the first base line past a diving Colabello. The play was ruled an error, but Davilla cleared the bases and ended up on third with the Jackals leading 8-4. A Larsen RBI single gave New Jersey a 9-4 advantage.
In the sixth inning, Tejeda lifted his first home run down the left field line to cap the scoring at 11-4. Jackals starter Ryan Pacyna (1-1) pitched well enough to earn his first win of the season. The Becker College graduate scattered eight hits over six innings while surrendering four earned runs. Worcester's Matt Weagle had his worst outing of the season, lasting just four innings while allowing nine runs - four earned - on nine hits. In game two, each of the first five Jackals hitters that came to the plate in the top of the first inning scored as New Jersey once again lead 5-0 in the middle of the first. Following an RBI single by Allen, Tejeda homered for the second straight at bat to put the Jackals up 4-0. Davilla followed with a solo home run - his first as a Jackal - to give New Jersey a five-run lead at the end of a half inning of play against Worcester started Junior Guerrero. In the bottom of the second inning, Trezza hit his second home run of the evening to cut the Worcester deficit to 5-1. In the top of the third, the Jackals countered when Tejeda hit his third straight home run to extend the lead to 6-1.
The Tornadoes rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third inning against New Jersey right-hander Michael Vicaro to pull within one at 6-5 before the Jackals put the game out of reach with four-runs of their own in the top of the fourth. With Worcester reliever Alex Pena in the game, a wild pitch enabled Jackals 2B Marcus Sanders to score from third before a three-run double off the bat of Larsen extended the New Jersey lead to 10-5 Worcester added an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Colabello singled home Weed, who had reached on a dropped fly ball by Larsen. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Tornadoes rallied for two more runs off reliever Justin Barnes, but Jackals closer Rusty Tucker came in to pitch the final inning and a third to earn his league-leading eighth save of the season. Vicaro (4-2) struggled, allowing six runs - five earned - over five innings, but he struck out five batters to earn the victory. Guerrero (2-3) was tagged with the loss after yielding six runs in three innings.
