Worcester Tornadoes News Release
WORCESTER, MA-Broken up by a thunder and lightning storm that delayed Tuesday night's battle with Quebec by 40 minutes, the Tornadoes were able to defeat Quebec with a 6-1 win, displayed by strong fourth and eighth innings.
The Tornadoes exploded in the bottom of the fourth inning; breaking up Keith Dunn's no hitter. Lucas Taylor reached first on an error and moved to third on Bob Tewksbary's double down the left field line. Chris Colabello then followed with a double down the left field line as well, scoring two and making the score 2-1. Right before the game was delayed due to thunder and lightning, Keith Beauregard extended the lead with a single, scoring Colabello. Once play resumed, Onix Mercado lined out to center, scoring Beauregard who had moved to third on a passed ball.
Quebec, known for their early scoring, was held scoreless in the bottom of the first after threatening with consecutive hits by second basemen Dany Scalabrini and Goeffrey Tomlinson. Scalabrini lined a double down the third baseline past a diving Jeff Lahair and Tomlinson followed with a single to right. Quebec looked as though they would continue the threat but were stalled as Tornadoes hurler DJ Mattox countered with a groundout to third and a strikeout to slugger Francisco Lebron.
Quebec threatened again in the top of the third inning but DJ Mattox got out of the inning with a double play fielded by recently acquired college standout Austin Wasserman.
Quebec broke their scoring silence in the top of the fifth inning when DJ Mattox walked Willie James who moved up to second on a stolen base and third on a double steal after Scalabrini walked. James then scored on Mattox's wild pitch. Mike Meagher came on in the top of the fifth inning to relieve Mattox.
The Tornadoes added some insurance in the bottom of the eighth when Josh Beauregard reached on an error and scored on Taylor's hit to right. Taylor scored after moving to third on a passed ball and coming home on Colabello's single to left, making it a 6-1 game.
Reliever Mike Meagher (1-2) recorded the win, while Matt Weagle and David Byard pitched strong, scoreless relief innings of work to ensure the win. Quebec's Keith Dunn was tagged with the loss, falling to 1-5.
The Tornadoes (14-11) scored 6 runs on 7 hits with no errors while Quebec (9-16) had 1 run on 6 hits, recording 4 errors. The Tornadoes wrap up their three game series with Quebec on Wednesday night at 7:05.
