North Shore Spirit News Release
The North Shore Spirit opened their season series with the Bay State rival Brockton Rox in style, cranking out 13 hits and dispensing of the Rox, 12-1 before a crowd of 3,017 at Fraser Field.
With the victory, the Spirit improved to 13-8 on the season, while Brockton fell to 10-14 on the year.
Spirit starter Bryan Morse allowed just one run on five hits in seven innings of work to earn the victory for the Spirit. Rox starter Brad Guy allowed six earned runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings of work to suffer the loss.
Jeff Brooks powered the Spirit offense with a 3-4 performance at the plate and four runs batted in, while Chris Rowan went 3-4 with three runs scored. Jon deVries also contributed mightily to the Spirit cause, going 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Brockton actually struck first in this contest, scoring their only run of the affair in the second inning.
North Shore started its scoring spree with a run in the second inning. Rowan doubled to get things started and came around to score on a grounder to right side from Brooks.
The Spirit really broke things open in the third inning, however, when they put five runs on the board. Ryan Bethel reached on an error to open the inning and moved all the way to third on a bunt single from Andy Howdeshell. Garrett Weir scored Bethel on an RBI single to put the Spirit back on top. A sacrifice bunt from B. J. Weed advanced both runners. After an intentional walk to Vic Davilla loaded the bases, Chris Rowan sent two runner home with an RBI double. Andrew Wishy followed with a walk and Brooks came through with a two-run single to close out the scoring in the inning.
Tempers flared in the fourth inning, but the Spirit still pushed three more runs across the plate. Jon deVries came through with an RBI double and Brooks picked up another RBI with a single for the eighth Spirit run.
North Shore tacked on two more runs in the Spirit sixth to extend the lead to 10. Ryan Bethel knocked the 10th run in with an RBI single.
The Spirit closed out the scoring in the seventh inning. deVries reached on a two-out double and scored the final Spirit run on an error by the Brockton third basemen.
North Shore and Brockton resume the three-game series tomorrow at Fraser Field. Three-time CanAm League pitcher of the week Ryan Bicondoa takes the mound for the Spirit while John Boker gets the start for the Rox. Bicondoa will be looking to extend his 30-inning scoreless streak for the Spirit.
