Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Worcester, MA -- The Pride sent 15 men to the plate in the 2nd inning, scoring 9 times off righty Reid Willett, as Nashua salvaged a series split from the Worcester Tornadoes with a 15-6 decision at Hanover Insurance Park on Thursday night.

Willett, coming off a 2+ inning, 12 hit, 5 walk, 14 earned run performance at Atlantic City on Sunday, was not much better tonight. The Worcester righty lasted just 1.1 innings, allowing 9 hits, a walk and 10 earned runs. The Pride got one in the 1st, then scored 9 in the 2nd on 9 hits, a walk and 2 hit batters. Eleven consecutive hitters reached base at one point. The 9 hits and 9 runs allowed in an inning were both season-high for Worcester.

Trailing 10-0 early, the Tornadoes battled back, scoring 6 unanswered runs over the next four innings off lefty Beau Hintz, who was knocked out in the 5th inning and didn't qualify for the win. But Nashua got to righty John Birtwell for 1 run in the 6th on a Tom Creighton sacrifice fly and a Bryan Duplissie 3-run home run in the 7th put the Pride up 14-6 and sealed the Tornadoes fate. Nashua tacked on one more off P.J. Bevis in the 9th to provide the final margin.

Steve Palazzolo (6-2) pitched 3.2 shutout innings of relief for the win and Willett (2-8) took the loss. Willet has now allowed 21 hits and 24 earned runs in his last 3.1 innings pitched over his last two starts. Tornadoes pitching hit a season-high 6 Nashua hitters in the game. Seven of the nine starters in the Nashua lineup had multi-hit games. Worcester reached double-digits in the hit column for the 8th time in the last 9 games. The Tornadoes will try to get back on track on Friday night when they travel to Lynn, MA for the first time this season for the first of a three-game weekend series against the second half-leading North Shore Spirit. Lefty Mike Meagher is scheduled to get the start for Worcester and he will be opposed by North Shore righty Gary Galvez. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
