Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Little Falls, NJ -- The New Jersey Jackals set new Can-Am League records for Runs (21) and Hits (28) in a game, as they humbled the Worcester Tornadoes, 21-10, at Yogi Berra Stadium on Monday night.
The Jackals hit parade began from the start. New Jersey jumped all over Worcester starter Eddie Pena (3-3) for 10 Hits and 6 Runs through the first 3 innings. But the Tornadoes fought back in the top of the 4th, batting around and scoring 5 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks off Jackals righty Juan Done (5-2), to close within one run at 6-5.
But the Jackals would blow the doors off in the 4th inning, sending 15 men to the plate and scoring 11 runs on 12 hits off righthanders Chandler Barnard (.1 IP, 7 H, 7 ER) and Shane Presutti (1.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER). The Jackals were aided by a very tough twilight that allowed two routine flyballs to drop in leftfield and rightfield because the Worcester corner outfielders couldn't see the ball. Still, the 11-run inning was the worst in Tornadoes history.
The Tornadoes would tack on two runs each in the 6th and 8th innings and another in the 9th, but the Jackals got to righty Justin Edwards for three in the 6th and one more in the 8th, all after two were out, to provide the final margin. The 21 runs and 28 hits in a single game put up by New Jersey are both new Can-Am League records, surpassing the previous league highs of 20 runs and 24 hits, repsectively.
Done (5-2) picked up the win depsite allowing 9 hits, 6 walks and 7 earned runs in just 6 innings pitched. Eddie Pena (3-3) took the loss. The Tornadoes are now 0-5 on the season against the Jackals, 21-10 vs. everyone else. Everyone in the Jackals' starting nine had at least one hit and one run scored and eight of the nine had multi-hit games. B.J. Weed was the lone silver lining on the night for Worcester, as he went 2-6, extending his hitting streak to a Tornadoes franchise record-tying 17 straight games.
Worcester will try to right the ship on Tuesday night when they play Game Two of their three-game series in New Jersey against the Jackals. Righty Alex Pena will get the start for Worcester. He will be opposed by Jackals lefthander Isaac Pavlik. The Tornadoes are 7-2 on the season in games started by opposing lefthanders. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
The Tornadoes return home on Thursday, July 3rd to host the Nashua Pride at 7:05pm. It will be Armed Forces Night at the ballpark and in honor of the July 4th holiday, the Tornadoes will feature their fourth postgame fireworks show of the season, courtesy of Becker College and Price Chopper. Tickets for the game are available in person by stopping by the Tornadoes box office at the ballpark or at the team office located at 303 Main St. in Worcester, by phone at 508-792-2288 or online by visiting www.worcestertornadoes.com.
