
Surf wash out Pride

(Nashua, N.H., June 30, 2008) the Atlantic City Surf handled the Nashua Pride, 11-6, on the strength of a five run fifth inning, in front of 1270 fans at Historic Holman Stadium on Monday Night.
The Surf were led at the plate by shortstop Anthony Granato, who went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, and two RBI. Third baseman Gil Zayas was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, left fielder Billy Kovatch went 1-for-4 with two RBI, while second baseman Brad Thoma finished the game 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI.
Pride starting pitcher Lance Stevens (4-3) suffered the loss, lasting four and two-thirds innings, giving up sevens runs, on eight hits, four walks and four strike outs. Relievers German Melendez and Chris Torres combined to pitch four and one third innings of relief, allowing four runs (two earned), on five hits, three walks and three strike outs.
Atlantic City's Rory Shortell (1-1) earned his first victory of the season in the start, going five innings, giving up three runs, on five hits, two walks and four strike outs. Jim Wladyka and Derek Duclos came out of the Surf bullpen and combined to give up three runs, on three hits, two walks and three strike outs.
Nashua right fielder Jeremy Pickrel was 2-for-3 in the game, hitting his team leading seventh home run and also adding a double to end with an RBI and two runs scored. First baseman Bryan Duplissie, like Pickrel, homered in his second consecutive game, ending the night 1-for-4 with an RBI. Left fielder Dennis Abreu had two RBI for Nashua in the effort, finishing the night 1-for-4, while third baseman Jack Joffrion and second baseman Ismael Castro also recorded an RBI for the Pride.
The Pride and Surf will play game two of the three game series on Tuesday night at, 7:05pm, when Nashua send Nicolas Suero (2-3) to the mound. Atlantic City will counter with J. C. Huguet.
