Surf ride offense wave to victory

Atlantic City Surf News Release

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Louisville used a five-run bottom of the seventh to register a 12-8 victory over Indianapolis in front of 7,722 Monday evening at Louisville Slugger Field.

The Bats improve to 47-38 overall and 23-19 at home, while the Indians fall to 40-45 on the season and 19-24 on the road. The Tribe slips to five games below .500 for the first time in four years as a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate.

Louisville grabbed a lead it would not relinquish just after the seventh-inning stretch. CF Chris Dickerson, RF Rob Mackowiak and LF Drew T. Anderson opened the frame by recording three consecutive walks.

Dickerson tied the affair by scoring on 2B Aaron Herr's groundout, while Mackowiak plated the go-ahead run on 1B Kevin Barker's infield single. The Bats proceeded to break it open after that as 3B Adam Rosales hammered a two-run triple to center and eventually scored on C Alvin Colina's sacrifice fly.

Louisville RHP Todd Coffey (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 SO) improved to 2-2 with the win, while Indianapolis RHP Marino Salas (1.0 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 1 SO) was charged with his third blown save of the year and fell to 2-1 with the loss.

The late rally erased seven Tribe runs over the first five innings. LF Nyjer Morgan and CF Andrew McCutchen collected base knocks in the first and scored on groundouts to quickly make it 2-0.

RF Matt Kata then whacked solo home runs in the second and fifth frames, while 2B Luis Ordaz clobbered a two-run roundtripper in the fourth and Morgan scored again on 1B Adam Boeve's single in the fifth.

Kata (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI) and Morgan (2-for-4, 2 R) picked up multi-hit performances for the Indians, while Boeve (1-for-4, 3 RBI) and Ordaz (1-for-4, 1 R, 2 RBI) collected more than one RBI. Kata now owns a pair of two-homer games in 2008, but has just six dingers in 72 contests.

Louisville pounded out 12 hits on the night, including three doubles, two triples and two homers. Mackowiak (3-for-4, 3 R, 2 RBI) and Rosales (3-for-5, 3 R, 2 RBI) led the offensive attack, while Colina (2-for-3, 3 RBI) and Herr (1-for-4, 2 R, 3 RBI) provided a strong supporting cast.

Neither starter -- Indianapolis RHP Bryan Bullington (6.0 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO) or Louisville LHP Adam Pettyjohn (4.0 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO) -- figured in the decision.

The setback gives the Indians their first three-game losing streak since June 1-3.

Monday evening's tilt marked the fourth of 21 straight against International League West Division opponents. From June 27 through July 20, the Tribe is scheduled to battle Columbus 11 times, Louisville six times and Toledo on four occasions.

The teams continue their four-game series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Jason Davis is scheduled to start for the Indians, while Cincinnati RHP Josh Fogg is expected to make a Major League rehabilitation start for the Bats.

The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
