New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - The New Jersey Jackals pounded out a Can-Am League record 21 runs on a league record-tying 28 hits as they defeated the first-place Worcester Tornadoes 21-10 on Monday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

The Jackals also tied a league record with an 11-run bottom of the fourth inning in which they banged out a league-record 12 hits. New Jersey also tied its team record with 28 hits, which was set on August 14, 2002 on the road against the Allentown Ambassadors. New Jersey built a 4-0 lead after two innings against Worcester starting pitcher Eddie Pena behind a first-inning RBI single by 3B Chris Kelly and RBI base knocks by SS Casey Gordon and 2B Marcus Sanders in the second. In the third inning, the Jackals added a pair of runs when RF Craig Maddox ripped his fifth home run of the season to extend New Jersey's lead to 6-0.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Tornadoes struck Jackals starter Juan Done for five runs to pull within one at 6-5. The big blast in the inning was a two-run triple by RF Scott Grimes. In the historic bottom of the fourth inning, the Jackals jumped on Worcester reliever Chandler Barnard who lasted just 1/3 of an inning after allowing seven runs on seven hits. Shane Presutti was next out of the bullpen for the Tornadoes but faired no better than Barnard, allowing three consecutive singles upon entering the game. The Jackals sent 15 batters to the plate in the frame, with three hitters collecting multiple hits during the inning which saw the Jackals take a 17-5 lead.

In the top of the sixth inning, Worcester plated two runs to cut the lead to 17-7, but the Jackals countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 20-7. The Tornadoes then rallied for two runs in the top of the eighth inning, but New Jersey countered once again with a run of their own in the home half of the inning to take a 21-9 lead. Worcester capped the scoring at 21-10 with a ninth inning run.

In the loss, Tornadoes CF BJ Weed tied Dominic Ramos's team record as he extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a 2-6 performance at the pate. For New Jersey, Sanders, DH Vic Davilla, and Maddox each collected four hits. Eight Jackals collected multiple hits in the contest.

Done (5-2) earned the win despite his worst performance this season. The right-hander, who entering the night had allowed four earned runs or less in each of his six starts this season, surrendered seven runs on nine hits over six innings while walking six batters and striking out four. Pena (3-3) was tagged with the loss after lasting just three innings and yielding six runs on ten hits. With ten games remaining in the first half, the Jackals pull within two games of the first place Capitales de Quebec, who entered the evening tied with Worcester atop the Can-Am League. With the win, the Jackals are now 5-0 this season against the Tornadoes, including last Thursday's 20-inning, six hours and six minute marathon 5-4 victory at Hanover Insurance Park in Worcester, MA.

The Jackals and Tornadoes continue their three-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium when Isaac Pavlik takes the hill for New Jersey against Worcester's Alex Pena. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, you can catch every inning via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the broadcast beginning five minutes prior to first pitch.
