Worcester Tornadoes News Release
The Federals scored first, but the Tornadoes scored more often in a 14-2 rout on Friday night at the HIP. Three Worcester batters had three hits, four had a pair, and every starting player had a run scored, a RBI or both.
Ryan Bicondoa won his first game as a Tornadoes pitcher, going seven strong innings in the victory. The sidearming righty struck six Federals out, walked none, and gave up two runs (both earned) on nine hits. Albert Ayala struck out the side in order in the eighth, and Rick Asadoorian ended a perfect ninth with a K.
New York took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, when Jacob Fabry knocked Alex Sumner home with an RBI single. The Tornadoes countered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning en route to scoring in each of the game's first seven frames. Chase Fontaine led the inning off with a walk on a payoff pitch. He took second on Brendon Kelliher's single and third on Chris Colabello's fielder's choice before scoring on a Mark Minicozzi RBI single to tie the game.
In the bottom of the second, Worcester scored another run after another leadoff batter reached base. In all eight innings at the plate, the Tornadoes' leadoff batter got on safely. In each of the first six innings, that batter scored. Salotti led the inning off with a double, moving to third on a bunt single by Cameron Monger and coming home on Ryan Crespi's sacrifice fly.
The Tornadoes scored two runs in the fifth on Salotti's homer, five runs in the sixth (as each of the first five batters reached and came across home), and one in the seventh. Salotti and Minicozzi each recorded three hits, while Kelliher, Colabello, Monger and Crespi all had two.
Worcester will try for its second series sweep in as many tries against the Federals on Saturday night, finishing the first half of the season. The first pitch on Scout Sleepover Night is at 7:05pm, with the gates opening at 6:00.
