New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, N.J. - The Jackals rallied back from a four-run, eighth-inning deficit, but the Brockton Rox hung on for their ninth straight win, 4-3, on Friday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. With the win, the surging Rox leapfrog New Jersey in the standings and move into second place in the Can-Am League standings.
As the game went scoreless through three innings, Brockton plated the game's first run in the top of the fourth. With two outs and two runners in scoring position, catcher Chris Grossman laced a base hit to left to score Keith Brachold and make it 1-0, but Jackals' left fielder Jordan Newton fired a perfect throw to the plate to cut down the trail runner, Trey Hernandez, who was trying to score from second to end the inning. The bottom of the fourth inning ended with Brockton left fielder Ryan Royster gunning down Myron Leslie at the plate.
In the top of the fifth, the Rox extended their lead to 3-0 with a pair of RBI singles by Chris Valencia and Brachold. Brockton tacked on a run in the sixth on a two-out double to right off the bat of Shawn Williams to make it 4-0 and chase New Jersey starter Jon Kibler from the contest.
New Jersey notched three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning when the Jackals loaded the bags before Leslie cleared the bases with a double, cutting the Brockton lead to 4-3.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Newton reached on a lead-off walk but was erased on a double play before Argenis Reyes grounded out to end the game.
In his third start with New Jersey, Kibler (0-2) was knocked out after surrendering four runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. Dustin Birosak (5-0) stayed perfect on the year when he was chased after not recording an out in the eighth inning and allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits.
The New Jersey bullpen, consisting of Jared Locke, Shaun Ellis and Jeff Gogal, turned in 3 1/3 innings of scoreless ball, allowing just one hit in the process.
The Jackals and Rox conclude their three-game series on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. when New Jersey sends right-hander Bobby Gagg (0-0, 2.66 ERA in 13 relief appearances) to the mound for his first start of the season against Brockton righty Freddy Flores (4-2, 3.41 ERA) to conclude the first half of the Can-Am League schedule at Yogi Berra Stadium. Cody Chrusciel and Matt Sutor have the call on the live webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at jackals.com.
