Tornadoes Drop Second Half Opener

July 16, 2007 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Worcester, MA -- The second half of the season began much like the first half ended, as the Worcester bats were no where to be found in a frustrating 5-1 loss to the North Shore Spirit at Hanover Insurance Park on Monday night.

The Spirit got to Tornadoes starter Alex Pena (3-4) for an unearned run in the 3rd inning when a Dominic Ramos error at second base prolonged the inning and allowed Vic Davilla, the Manager and First Baseman for the Spirit, to single in the first run of the game. North Shore made it 2-0 in the 4th on a two-out RBI double by Jerson Perez.

The Tornadoes finally scratched across a run off righty Ryan Bicondoa (4-2) in the bottom of the 4th inning, using a single, stolen base and a two-out Patrick Perry RBI single to make it 2-1. But that would be all the damage the Tornadoes bats were able to do. Davilla added a two-run home run off Pena in the 7th and an RBI single of Ryan Mitchell in the 9th to seal the game.

Bicondoa (4-2) picked up the win and Pena (3-4) took the loss. Derek Drage retired all four men he faced for his 4th save of the season. Davilla went 4-5 in the game with 4 RBIs. Four of the five North Shore runs scored after two were out. Tornadoes hitters struck out a season-high 14 times in the game and managed just six total hits, all singles. Worcester is now 1-13 when they score fewer than four runs. The Tornadoes will try to even up the series at one win apiece on Tuesday night when they send lefty Mike Meagher to the mound in Game Two of their four-game series with North Shore. The Spirit will counter with lefty Joey Siak. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm
