New Jersey Jackals News Release

The New Jersey Jackals dropped the first game of the second half of the season 8-2 to the Can-Am Grays. In a game that featured sloppy play and plenty of off field distractions, the Jackals suffered their sixth loss in their last eight games.

New Jersey got off to a quick start when right fielder Francisco Leandro drove the first pitch he say into the right field gap for a triple. Grays starter Beau Dannemiller then walked second baseman Zack Smithlin and first baseman Clyde Williams on nine total pitches. With the bases loaded and nobody out in the top of the first inning the Jackals only managed to score one run on an RBI sacrifice fly by Sandy Madera.

The Grays returned the runs in the top of the second on an RBI double by third baseman Ben Tinius. Both first baseman Jose Velasquez and designated hitter Sean Gamble would score on the play.

The Jackals went down quickly in the bottom of the second inning and the Grays would capitalize in the top of the third.

With runners on base, catcher JB Tucker dribbled a ground ball down the first base line. The ball was misplayed by first baseman Clyde Williams, yet Jackals starting pitcher Joel Bennett managed to track the ball down and tag first. Tucker was called safe, prompting both Bennett and manager Joe Calfapietra to question the call. As the focus was on the first base area, Jackals' third base coach Ed Ott, sitting on the bench, was ejected by home plate umpire Rich Katz.

When the dust finally cleared play resumed and the Jackals, who seemed a bit shaken after what had unfolded, could only watch as Tinius ripped his second two-RBI double of the game. Tinius would come around to score when the next batter, right fielder Anthony Bennett tripled into the right field gap.

Dannemiller earned an extremely impressive victory, allowing just two earned runs in eight innings of work.

Bennett suffered his second straight loss.
