Tornadoes Clip Cutters, Win First Home Series

May 30, 2007 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

The Worcester Tornadoes received outstanding pitching for the second straight game, and scored five times in the last three innings to defeat the New Haven County Cutters, 5-1, and take two out of three in the first home series of the 2007 season.

After a slugfest and a blowout, the series finale between the Tornadoes and the Cutters was a pitchers duel. Righty Junior Guerrero and Cutters lefty Brad Whitworth matched zeros on the score board through five scoreless innings. Guerrero allowed just two hits, but walked five and left after five shutout innings. Chris Shank took over to start the 6th and gave up a leadoff double to Junior Zamora, who came around to score on a two-out triple by Orlando Encarnacion to give the Cutters a 1-0 lead.

Worcester would immediately tie the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the 6th, as Euvi Solano and Luis Sabino hit back-to-back triples to start the inning, but Sabino was stranded at third base. The Tornadoes took the lead in the 7th off New Haven reliever Tom Rispoli (0-1), just acquired from Brockton last night. A one-out walk, a perfectly executed hit-and-run single and a sacrifice fly from Dominic Ramos gave Worcester a 2-1 lead.

Meanwhile, the Tornadoes were getting more good work out of the bullpen. Righty John Birtwell (1-1) pitched two hitless innings in the 7th and 8th and Yohanny Valera put the game away in the bottom of the 8th, ripping a three-run, opposite field home run off Cutters Closer Andy Weimer, providing the final score of 5-1. Eddie Pena pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning with a strikeout as the Tornadoes won their second straight game to improve to 2-4 on the season.

Valera extended his hitting streak to a season-long 6 games and is now 11 for his last 16 at the plate. The Tornadoes will look for a little revenge as they welcome the Quebec Capitales to town for the first game of a four-game series starting Thursday night. Righty D.J. Mattox will get te start for Worcester and he is slotted to be opposed by Quebec righty Karl Gelinas. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
