Jackals Start Strong But Bullpen Blows Lead

Little Falls, NJ - The Jackals dropped the rubber match of their three game series against the Capitales de Quebec on Thursday, losing the game 9-7.

Ben Thurmond took the mound for the Jackals and immediately found himself in trouble when the Capitales put up three runs in the first inning. Thurmond, however, would settle in after the first inning and throw six innings, only allowing the three runs scored in the first.

Center fielder Tim Turner would single in the bottom of the third inning and then steal both second and third base. Second baseman Zack Smithlin drove a ball deep to center field later in the inning, scoring Turner on a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the fifth inning the Jackals would find the plate three times, giving them a 4-3 lead. Leandro collected one of his three walks in the game with one out and when then brought around to score by third baseman Sandy Madera's line drive homerun over the left field wall. Designated hitter Alex Frazier was then hit in the back by the next pitch by Quebec starter Jorge Perez. Frazier would score later in the inning on a single by first baseman Jeremy Pickrel.

The following inning would be just as successful for the Jackals. Short stop Joe Mihaliks singled in catcher Matt Lauderdale and Mihaliks would come around to score in the next at bat coutesy of a double by Turner. Turner would then steal his third base of the game, setting up and RBI sacrifice fly by Leandro.

With a commanding 7-3 lead and all of the momentum in the Jackals favor, manager Joe Calfpietra turned to his bullpen, bringing in right-hander Sean Kramer.

Kramer would surrender 4 runs on 4 hits, most significantly on an RBI triple by catcher Greg Stevens.

Justin Garza would then come in and allow 2 runs, giving the Capitales a 9-7 lead.

Marc-Andre Major earned the victory for Quebec in relief while Garza suffered the loss. T.J. Stanton picked up his second save of the series.
