May 30, 2007 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Worcester, MA -- The Worcester Tornadoes won their first game of 2007 in emphatic fashion, crushing the New Haven County Cutters, 18-0, behind a Can-Am League record three home runs and 10 RBIs from first baseman Chris Colabello at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field tonight.

The Tornadoes jumped on the Cutters right off the bat with four 1st inning runs on a two-run single from Josh Beauregard and Colabello's first homer, a two-run shot to center. Worcester made it 7-0 in the 3rd inning when Colabello launched a towering three-run blast to left with two outs in the inning. A two-run ground rule double by Euvi Solano in the 3rd made it 9-0 and the Tornadoes were cruising.

Worcester broke it open big time in the 4th inning, sending 12 men to the plate and scoring seven times, highlighted by a two-run blast by Yohanny Valera and Colabello's grand slam off outfield Doug Vroman who was in in mopup relief of the starter Jeff Farrell (0-1) who was tagged for 13 earned runs in 3+ innings. Meanwhile, lefty Mike Meagher (1-0) was brilliant in his first professional start, tossing 6 shutout innings while striking out 8. The Tornadoes added one more in the 6th and a Colabello RBI single in the 8th capped off the scoring and provided the 18-0 final tally.

Colabello's three home runs, 10 RBIs and 13 Total Bases are all new Can-Am League and Worcester Tornadoes records. Every Tornadoes starter had at least one hit and scored at least one run. Valera went 4-5 and missed the cycle by a triple. He is now 9 for his last 12 at the plate. Mike MacMillan made his first professional start at DH and went 1-3 with three walks and three runs scored. Tornadoes pitchers struck out 13 Cutters hitters, two shy of the league record. The Tornadoes have scored 30 runs on 32 hits in the first two games of the series.

The Tornadoes will try to take the rubber game of their home-opening three-game series with the Cutters when they send righty Junior Guerrero (0-0, 3.60) to the hill against Cutters lefty Brad Whitworth (0-1, 1.35). The matinee affair is a scheduled noon first pitch.
