Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Richmond, Va.) July 10, 2014 - Round one belongs to the RubberDucks.
In the much-anticipated first series of the season between the top two teams in the EL West, the Akron RubberDucks took three of four games from the first place Squirrels, capping the series with a convincing, 9-2 victory on Thursday night at The Diamond.
The win pulled the RubberDucks (53-40) to within one game of the front-running Flying Squirrels (54-39). The two teams will meet again at Canal Park July 21-23, in the final meeting of the season series.
On Thursday, Justin Toole's RBI single off side-arm lefty Phil McCormick (2-4) with two outs in the seventh inning snapped a 2-2 tie and gave the RubberDucks the lead for good. Then in the eighth, the RubberDucks blew the game open with six runs off righthander Jose Casilla to make it 9-3. Jordan Smith delivered the key blow in the eighth when he blasted a three-run, bases-clearing triple to the gap in the left-center field. Smith now has 35 RBI on the season.
Akron starter and Richmond native Will Roberts (9-9) worked seven innings to earn the win. Roberts scattered four hits and allowed just two runs. He walked one and struck out seven. Scoreless relief help came from righthanders Enosil Tejeda and Adam Miller, with one inning apiece.
Toole finished with two hits on the night. Francisco Lindor enjoyed a three-hit night, including a double in the eighth, and newcomer Tim Fedroff laced a pair of RBI singles.
The RubberDucks will begin the second leg of the road trip with the start of a four-game series at Trenton, new Jersey, on Friday night at 7:05. The RubberDucks have not confirmed a starter for the game, while the Thunder have tabbed lefty Manny Banuelos (0-2, 5.33). The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
The Akron RubberDucks are the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. The 2014 season is the 18th since moving to Canal Park and the first as the RubberDucks.
