'Wolves Turn Triple Play in Win over Curve

The SeaWolves won their third straight game as they erased an early deficit, taking down the Altoona Curve, 6-4, on Wednesday night at People's Natural Gas Field.

Altoona jumped ahead in the first inning against Erie starter Jeff Ferrell. Alen Hanson led off with a double and he scored on a one-out Elias Diaz double for a 1-0 lead. Matt Curry doubled home Diaz for a 2-0 lead. Stetson Allie followed with an RBI knock, scoring Curry for a 3-0 lead.

The Curve added a run in the third. Dan Gamache led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a Curry sacrifice fly.

After Curve starter Pat Ludwig faced the minimum through three innings, the Erie offense came alive in the top of the fourth. Jamie Johnson walked and Marcus Lemon singled putting two on base. With one out, Steven Moya belted his third triple of the season to the wall in right-center, cutting the Curve lead to 4-2. The RBI for Moya were number 71 & 72. Moya scored on a Ramon Cabrera groundout making it 4-3.

Erie grabbed the lead in the fifth. Dixon Machado walked and moved to second on a Johnson single. On a hit-and-run, Lemon singled through the left side, plating Machado, and moving Johnson to third. Johnson scored on a Daniel Fields groundout for a 5-4 Erie lead.

In the seventh, Ferrell allowed consecutive singles to Hanson and Gamache and was lifted in favor of Guido Knudson. On a hit-and-run, Diaz sent a liner into right that was caught by Moya. Moya fired the ball to Corey Jones at first for the second out and Jones fired to Lemon at second who tagged Hanson, completing a triple play. It was the third triple play in SeaWolves history, the first since April 17, 2005 against Altoona. The only other triple play was during the 1995 season when the 'Wolves were a short season affiliate of the Pirates.

Erie added an insurance run in the eighth when Dean Green laced a single to left, moved to second on a balk, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. It was the fourth Erie run of the series coming on a wild pitch.

Knudson went on to retire the last six of the game in order, earning his first save.

Ferrell (6-6) earned the win allowing four runs on 12 hits with no walks and two strikeouts in six-plus innings of work.
