Tomek Keeps Hawks on Top
April 7, 2018 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Matej Tomek made 30 saves, and the Waterloo Black Hawks swept a weekend series versus the Sioux Falls Stampede with a 4-1 Saturday win at Young Arena.
The Omaha Lancers also won Friday and Saturday contests, so Waterloo remains atop the USHL Western Conference by just one point going into the final week of the season. Both the Hawks and Lancers have two games remaining.
Tomek was at his best in the opening period as the Stampede generated seven of the first eight shots on the night. He claimed his 14th win of the season.
The only goal in the opening 20 minutes came during a five-on-three Black Hawks power play. At 16:15, Ben Copeland skated across the slot into the right circle. His shot back the opposite direction was in and out in the blink of an eye, but nudged Waterloo to the lead.
The Hawks stretched the margin to as many as three goals in the second. At 4:13, James Marooney's low blast from the left point deflected up and under the crossbar off a defender. Then during a power play at 9:18, Garrett Wait was able to snipe a shot from the inside edge of the left circle.
A power play also provided the breakthrough for the Stampede near the end of the second. With nine seconds remaining on a Black Hawks penalty, Kevin Conley found the net from the right wing circle.
Waterloo made sure the Stampede rally would extend no farther. Solag Bakich recorded the only goal of the third period on a backhanded wraparound at 10:32.
The Hawks enter the final weekend of the season by visiting the Madison Capitols next Friday. Then Saturday, the home and regular season finale pits Waterloo against the Des Moines Buccaneers. That 7:05 game on Fan Appreciation Night will be highlighted by 500 t-shirts being tossed into the crowd at intermission, presented by Next Generation Wireless. For tickets, call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
