Madison Capitols News Release

MADISON, WI - The Madison Capitols' comeback fell short in their 5-3 defeat by the Muskegon Lumberjacks at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena on Saturday night.

Madison (22-31-2-2) is ranked eighth in the Eastern Conference with 48 points. Muskegon (32-24-1-1) sits in third place in the Eastern Conference with 66 points.

Left wing Egor Afansayev hopped off the Lumberjacks bench and came barreling into the Capitols zone to halt a clearing pass. Afansayev grabbed the loose puck and skated into the slot before wristing a shot into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season at 6:25 of the middle frame and a 4-0 lead.

The Del Gaizo brothers gave the Lumberjacks a 2-0 lead just 25 seconds apart with defenseman Marc Del Gaizo scored his 12th goal of the season at 14:11 of the opening period, and center Anthony Del Gaizo scored his league-leading 39 goal of the season at 14:35 of the first period. Skating 4-on-4, right wing Vincent de Mey held the puck in at the right point of the Capitols zone and sent it down the wing to left wing Matej Pekar in the right corner. Pekar passed the puck behind the net to M. Del Gaizo who carried it around the left side of the cage and then into the slot before slipping the puck pasted the outstretched right left of goaltender Dryden McKay for the 1-0 lead.

Just 24 seconds later, the Lumberjacks capitalized on the power play. Defenseman Colby Bukes passed the puck from the right point to center Emilio Pettersen along the right wing half-wall. Pettersen skated through the right face-off circle and found A. Del Gaizo in the left face-off circle. A. Del Gaizo carried the puck in toward McKay before sniping a shot inside the left goal post for a 2-0 advantage.

Muskegon jumped ahead to 3-0 with defenseman Alexander Yakovenko's third goal of the season only 51-seconds into the second period. Left wing Nolan Sullivan passed the puck from the right face-off circle to Pekar in the right corner. Pekar carried the puck toward the slot before finding Yakovenko in the left circle for a one-timer.

Muskegon took a 5-0 lead at 11:24 of the second period with Pettersen's 14th goal of the season. A. Del Gaizo interrupted the Capitols clearing attempted near the left point and found Pettersen wide open between the hashmarks. Pettersen beat McKay for the Lumberjacks final goal of the game.

The Capitols fought back with center Ludwig Stenlund's 17th goal of the season at 12:15 of the second period. Skating shorthanded, defenseman Jacob Nordqvist sprung Stenlund down the center of the ice with a breakaway. It was nothing but net for Stenlund's third goal in as many games.

Left wing Verners Egle jammed in his 12th tally of the season at 15:30 of the middle stanza. Forward Kamil Sadlocha grabbed the loose puck between the hash marks and chipped it up the ice to Egle in the slot. Egle snuck the puck past netminder Keegan Karki to bring the score to 5-2.

The Capitols continued to battle back and center Cade Borchardt's 13th goal of the season at 16:54 of the third period. Cycling the puck on the power play, defenseman Michael Schumacher collected the puck at the center point of the Lumberjacks zone and found right wing Ryan O'Reilly in the left face-off circle. O'Reilly one-timed a shot that Karki halted. Borchardt was on the doorstep to chip in the rebound and bring the final score to 5-3.

McKay (18-23-1-2) took his 23rd loss of the season stopping 28-of-33 shots. Karki (23-16-0-0) earned his 23rd win of the season stopping 33-of-36 shots.

Madison went 1-for-7 on the power play. Muskegon was 1-for-2 with the man advantage.

Notables: Center Ludwig Stenlund is on a four-game point streak with three goals and an assist for four points...Center Cade Borchardt is on a two-game point streak with a goal and a stick.
