Sioux City Musketeers News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA - The Musketeers were back at the Tyson Events Center for the final home game of the 2017-18 regular season against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, but they failed to end the home schedule on a high note losing by a final score of 6-4.
Both the Musketeers and the RoughRiders came into the game tonight battling for the final playoff spot in their respective conferences, giving this game the feeling of a playoff game. It would be the RoughRiders who would strike first in this one off a goal from Marek Valach. It would take the Musketeers almost the entire period, but they would eventually get the equalizer thanks to Martin Pospisil at the 19:06 mark. Matt Jurusik turned away 9 of 10 shots in the period, and the teams would head into the locker room tied at one.
The Musketeers would take the lead six and a half minutes into the 2nd period thanks to a laser from Dylan Mills that hit the post before finding the back of the net. The RoughRiders would answer a minute later on a goal from their captain graham Slaggert. Eventually, It would be Slaggert who gave the RoughRiders a 3-2 on the powerplay with just 30 seconds to go in the period, setting the stage for a crucial 3rd-period comeback for Sioux City.
Unfortunately, the Musketeers would be unable to find the magic they needed to make a successful comeback. Kyle Looft scored halfway through the period to give the RoughRiders a two-goal lead. Parker Ford gave the Musketeers some life 5 minutes later after an excellent shot beat Cedar Rapids goaltender Blake Pietila. The RoughRiders went on to regain their two-goal lead just two minutes later on a goal by Matthew Thomson. Liam Walsh added an empty net goal to practically seal the deal for Cedar Rapids. The Musketeers continued to battle, and Sammy Walker would pick up his second goal of the year after some nice passing left the net wide open for him. Unfortunately, Sioux City could not get the two more they needed, and they would ultimately lose by a final score of 6-4.
The good news for Sioux City is the Lincoln Stars managed to beat the Tri-City Storm meaning the Musketeers playoff chances are still alive, but they will need help to get there. They will continue their push for the playoffs tomorrow in Cedar Rapids, puck drop set for 7:05.
