JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Tomahawks completed their second sweep of the Springfield Jr. Blues in just over a month Saturday night at the Cambria County War Memorial, besting their division rivals with a come-from-behind 6-5 victory.
The Tomahawks picked up right where they left off from the previous night with a quick goal by Matt Meier to give them a 1-0 lead 1:25 into the first period. Brandon Reinholz set up the play to give Meier the slap shot from the top of the goal crease, earning him his sixth goal of the season.
Springfield gained momentum in the second period, scoring three goals in 3:14. Springfield tied the game at one with a stick-side goal from Patrick Curry at 1:06 in the second to give him his seventh goal of the season. Michael Mylchreest gave Springfield its first lead of the series at 2:54 as he received a pass from Max Kalter on the power play to earn his fourth goal of the season. Springfield made it 3-1 at 4:20 when Davis Dekorte scored a short-handed goal off a pass from Nik Dotolo. Assisted by Omar Mullan, Shane Bednard scored his seventh goal of the season - and his fifth in the last three games -- as he put the puck past Springfield's goaltender Sandro Aeschlimann, to make it 3-2 at 11:49 in the second period of play.
Omar Mullan tied the game at three 0:29 into the third as he and Bednard both picked up their second points of the night. The assist brought Bednard to eighth points in the last three games three games.
Springfield gained the 4-3 lead at 4:43 as Alex Baskakov set up Mike Severson on the power play to get his fifth goal of the season, but the Tomahawks tied up the game for the second time at 8:27 in the third as Garrison Sanipass capitalized on a Springfield turnover to earn him his first career NAHL goal.
Reinholz scored the next two goals, just 3:12 apart, with assists from Brady Bender and Meier, respectively. The goals - Reinholz's eighth and ninth on the season - brought the Tomahawks captain to three points in the game, with his goals coming at 13:27 and 16:39 of the period.
Springfield answered soon after, however, as Igor Vladykovskii beat Johnstown goalie Alex Okicki with a fluttering wrist shot, bringing the Junior Blues with one, but the Tomahawks were able to close out Springfield for the win.
Okicki stopped 26 of 31 shots for the Tomahawks, and Aeschlimann made 23 saves on 29 shots for Springfield.
The Tomahawks will be at the War Memorial next weekend, Nov. 15-16, to take on the Wenatchee Wild for the first time this season.
