July 22, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

L.J. Hoes had three hits to pace Norfolk's offensive attack, but Toledo used a big first inning to knock off the Tides 5-2 Friday night at Harbor Park.

Toledo wasted little time in jumping on Tides starter Joe Gunkel (5-9), as the Hens sent nine men to the plate in a five-run first inning. Toledo opened the contest with three straight infield singles before Steven Moya put the Hens on the board with a two-run single to center. Dean Green later followed with an RBI single of his own, and after a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout the Tides faced an early 5-0 deficit.

Gunkel rebounded after the rocky first, as the 24-year-old right-hander did not allow a run over his next five innings of work. His final line included nine hits allowed and two strikeouts without a walk as he threw 71 of his 94 pitches for strikes.

Hoes singled three times, scored a run and stole a base to lead the Tides, while Michael Almanzar added a single and a double in the setback. Audry Perez and Francisco Pena contributed RBI singles, as Norfolk lost for the eighth time in its last ten games.

Edgar Olmos was impressive in relief, as the left-hander struck out five over two perfect innings out of the bullpen. Olmos is now 4-1 with a 3.24 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 50.0 innings pitched this season.

Joe Mantiply (1-1) earned the victory with two shutout innings of relief, while Blaine Hardy recorded the final four outs to earn his first save of the season.

The two clubs continue their four-game set on Saturday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 7:05. Ariel Miranda (3-7, 4.09) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by southpaw Daniel Norris (4-6, 4.52), who will be making a Major League Rehab assignment.

Saturday is Air Force Night at Harbor Park, as the Tides will honor all the brave men and women that serve in the Air Force throughout the evening. Gates will open early at 5:30 pm, as fans can get their picture taken with their favorite Tides players from 5:45 - 6:15, courtesy of Canon Virginia. The night will wrap up with a postgame fireworks show presented by Navy Mutual.
