Rochester Red Wings News Release
Jose Berrios struck out nine for the second straight start, leading the Red Wings to a 3-1 win over the Syracuse Chiefs Friday night at Frontier Field.
The Red Wings return home Friday, July 29 to host Lehigh Valley (Phillies), with WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley signing autographs before the game and post-game fireworks. Complete promotions details below...
The Chiefs got off to a quick start against Wings starter Berrios. Steve Lombardozzi singled after a quick out to start the inning, and then scored on a double by Brian Goodwin to put the Chiefs up 1-0.
Berrios settled down in the second, third and fourth innings, as he only allowed one hit while striking out two batters.
Chiefs starter A.J. Cole stifled the Wings to start the game. The righty allowed two hits but struck out two batters in the first three innings. After striking out James Beresford to end the third inning, Cole managed to strike out the heart of the Wings order in the fourth to bring his total up to five for the game.
Berrios looked dominant in the fifth inning. After striking out Jason Martinson to start the inning, he picked off Zach Collier at first then struck out Adrian Sanchez to bring his total to five for the game.
Byung Ho Park ended the Wings funk at the plate by blasting a solo home run to start the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 1-1. The homer was Park's fourth since being optioned to Rochester on July 1.
When Berrios fanned Matt den Dekker for the second out in the sixth inning, it was the 100th strikeout of the season for Berrios. He came into play Friday fifth in the league in strikeouts.
Berrios continued to pitch well in the top of the seventh, and was aided with a great play at second by Jorge Polanco before notching his eighth strikeout of the game. After walking a batter in the fifth, he recorded eight straight outs.
Tommy Field gave the Wings a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh as he launched a two-run 414-ft homer to center field. The home run was Field's eighth of the season. Rochester native Chris Bostick made a great sliding play at second to field a grounder by Wilfredo Tovar and throw him out at first to end the inning.
Berrios brought more of the same in the eighth inning. He picked up his ninth strikeout of the game and retired 19 of the previous 20 batters. He finished with three hits, an earned run and a walk allowed with the nine strikeouts. Berrios threw 99 pitches, 71 for strikes.
Cole went eight innings, his longest outing of the season, and allowed six hits, three earned runs and a walk with eight strikeouts. Cole threw 95 pitches, 71 for strikes.
Sean Burnett pitched the ninth inning, setting down the side and getting help from a leaping catch by Adam Brett Walker for the final out of the game.
