Toledo Takes Down Tides for Third Straight Win

July 22, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

The Hens sent Matt Crouse to the hill, as he attempted to win his fifth game of the season for Toledo. Crouse, for a second consecutive start, was unable to make it through five innings, as the young southpaw pitched four innings allowing four hits and two runs, while striking out two and walking three. The Tides looked to Joe Gunkel to defeat the Mud Hens, but the big righty suffered his ninth loss of the season with Norfolk, going six innings and allowing five runs off of nine hits.

The Mud Hens offense continued their hot hitting ways in Friday's game, as Toledo loaded the bases in the top of the first inning with consecutive infield singles off the bats of Alex Presley, Dixon Machado, and Casey McGehee. Steven Moya followed with a sharp two-RBI single to center plating Presley and Machado to make it 2-0. The next batter was Chad Huffman who notched a single of his own to reload the bases, and then Dean Green followed with an RBI single to left field to make it 3-0. JaCoby Jones made it 4-0 Toledo after he lofted a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Moya. A Miguel Gonzalez RBI groundout to second scoring Huffman made it 5-0 Mud Hens.

The Tides struck back for two runs of their own in the bottom half of the first inning, which was highlighted by an RBI double off the bat of Francisco Pena to make it 5-2 Mud Hens.

Joe Mantiply replaced Crouse on the bump for the Hens in the fifth inning, as he pitched two scoreless innings for his win of the 2016 season with Toledo. Ruben Alaniz was called upon in the seventh, and Blaine Hardy came on in the eighth and ninth innings to record a four out save, his first of the season.

Toledo plays game three against Norfolk tomorrow night with a first pitch slated for 7:05 PM at Harbor Park, as LHP Daniel Norris will make a second consecutive MLB rehab start for the Hens and will face the Tides' LHP Ariel Miranda (3-7, 4.09 ERA).

Toledo Tidbits:

Mud Hens Big Mashers- Steven Moya, Casey McGehee, and Chad Huffman combined for six of the nine Mud Hen hits Friday night. McGehee extended his hitting streak to 13 games, and Huffman notched his sixth hit in two games against the Tides. Moya cashed in with two hits of his own including a two-RBI single in the first inning.

Bullpen Shines Bright- The Toledo bullpen has come to play as of late, getting the job done late in games, and in fact, the Mud Hens are 33-3 when leading after the seventh inning. However, on Friday night, it was two unfamiliar faces that got the job done out of the Hen pen in the form of Joe Mantiply and Ruben Alaniz. Mantiply pitched two scoreless innings while only allowing one hit and striking out one to win his first game of the season and third in his AAA career, and Alaniz went 1.2 innings while giving up two hits and striking out three. Blaine Hardy came on in the eighth to earn the save, his first of the 2016 season with Toledo.

Bring on the South- Toledo began a streak of ten consecutive games against the IL South with back-to-back wins against Norfolk. The Mud Hens improved their overall record against the South to 10-10 and 3-2 against the Tides. Toledo will head to Durham next for three games and then hosts Gwinnett at Fifth Third Field for a three game set.
