ALLENTOWN, PA - The Binghamton Devils were unable to solve Dustin Tokarski as the Lehigh Valley Phantoms skated away with a 4-0 victory in front of 8,757 fans at PPL Center on Saturday night.
After no scoring in the opening period, Phil Varone put the Phantoms on the board early in the second on the power play on a tap in. Mikhail Vorobyev sent the puck to Varone at the top of the crease and he tapped it by the pad of goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood for the 1-0 lead. The goal was Varone's 18th of the year from Vorobyev and TJ Brennan just 5:52 into the second.
For the second game in a row, the Devils faced a five-on-three power play and the Phantoms converted to take a two-goal lead. Chris Conner beat Blackwood on the two minute, two-man advantage for his 15th of the year and a 2-0 advantage. Conner's goal came with 1:32 left in the second period with assists from Greg Carey and Mike Vecchione and the Phantoms took that lead into the third despite being outshot by the Devils, 19-15.
The Phantoms added two goals in the third period for a 4-0 victory. Corban Knight's 12th of the year at 3:54 put Lehigh Valley up 3-0 and Vorobyev's sixth of the year finished out the scoring, 4-0, at 15:56 of the final frame.
Blackwood stopped 23 shots in the loss while Dustin Tokarski put aside all 29 shots for the shutout win.
The Binghamton Devils are back home tomorrow, March 4 at 5:05 p.m. against the Utica Comets. Kid's tickets are just $5 and include a FREE happy meal courtesy of McDonald's.
