Syracuse Crunch News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Despite a 5-4 overtime loss to the Laval Rocket tonight at the War Memorial Arena, the Syracuse Crunch picked up a point and built their third seven-game point streak of the season.
Eight different Crunch players tallied a point in tonight's matchup with Mat Bodie, Carter Verhaeghe and Dennis Yan recording two each. The loss moves the Crunch to 35-18-3-3 on the season and 3-2-1-1 in the eight-game series.
Crunch goaltender Eddie Pasquale turned aside 17-of-22 shots on goal, while Zachary Fucale recorded the win with 33 saves for the Rocket. Syracuse capitalized on 2-of-5 power play opportunities, and went 4-for-6 on the penalty kill.
Laval opened scoring 4:28 into the first period when Chris Terry redirected Michael McCarron's shot from the slot. Jordan Boucher recorded the secondary assist.
The Crunch evened the score just 24 seconds later when Gabriel Dumont sniped a shorthanded marker from between the circles with the help of Michael Bournival. Halfway through the first, Syracuse took the lead. Jonne Tammela fired from the left circle, but was turned away by Fucale. His rebound kicked out towards the far corner where Erik Condra cleaned it up from a sharp angle along the goal line.
Syracuse built a two-goal lead with a power-play goal four minutes into the middle frame. Yan jammed in a loose puck during a battle in front of the net, while Bodie and Mitchell Stephens tallied points for the assists.
The Rocket cut the Crunch lead back to one with a power-play goal of their own 11:22 into the second. Boucher came in on a short breakaway and backhanded a shot over Pasquale's glove.
Five minutes later, the Crunch reclaimed their two-goal lead with another marker on the man-advantage. Yan teed up Bodie for a slap shot from the point through traffic. Verhaeghe made it a multi-point game on the play.
Laval scored two goals in the third period to climb back and force overtime. Just 12 seconds into the frame, Antoine Waked flew down the right wing and powered a shot from the boards. Kerby Rychel then beat Pasquale from the slot to knot the score, 4-4, at the end of regulation.
The Rocket completed their comeback with 31 seconds remaining in the extra frame. Willie Corrin's shot from the right circle was stopped, but the Crunch failed to clear the rebound and Jeremy Gregoire chipped in the game-winner.
The Crunch host the Hershey Bears on Friday, March 9 at 7 p.m at the War Memorial Arena.
