Wilson Tobs News Release

MARTINSVILLE, V.A. (June 21, 2011) - The Wilson Tobs (10-9) used a three homerun attack to sneak past the Martinsville Mustangs (8-12), 7-6 on Tuesday night at Hooker Field.

In a game that lasted nearly five hours due to a 110 minute rain delay in the top of the third inning, the Tobs ended up using six different pitchers (a season-high) in a game that saw a bit of everything.

The Mustangs struck early in the bottom of the first inning, taking advantage of a couple of errors by Tobs starting pitcher Gil Walker to go ahead 2-0 before an out was made. Walker faced five hitters in the first and walked three of them before being pulled by manager Bruce Johnson with the bases loaded. RHP Tyler Saltsman replaced Walker and gave up a sac fly that put Martinsville ahead 3-0 before the inning finally came to an end.

In the very next frame Wilson responded with a solo homerun to right by RF Ryan Daughtry (4), giving him the team lead for homers and putting the Tobs within two, 3-1.

In the bottom of the second, Martinsville got that run back when SS Brad Vance led off with a double down the left field line. Third baseman John Faircloth brought him home when he grounded into a 6-3 double play.

The game was halted with two outs in the top of the third because of lightning in the area. The 110 minute delay was the longest stoppage the Tobs have experienced this season. The first batter up for Wilson when the game resumed, 1B Joe Costigan, went yard for his first long ball of the year, bringing Wilson back within two, 4-2.

In the top of the fourth the first three hitters reach based for the Tobs with singles. After an RBI groundout by 2B Alex Jones tied the game at 4-4, CF Ryan Mathews put Wilson ahead for the first time in the game with a two-run homer to left. It was Mathews third homer of the season and gave the Tobs their first three homerun game this season.

Wilson added another run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by LF Tony Wieber. The Mustangs answered in the bottom of the inning with two of their own, scoring on an RBI double by 1B Justin Sizemore and a wild pitch. The Tobs led 7-6 after five.

The lead held thanks to solid late-inning relief for Wilson. Getting the win was LHP Chad Girodo (1-0) in his first appearance this summer for the Tobs. RHP Dustin Javins (0-3) took the loss for Martinsville and RHP Clay Murphy earned his first save of the season.

The Tobs return home tomorrow, June 22 to take on the Edenton Steamers at Fleming Stadium. It will be the sixth meeting this season between the Tobs and the Steamers, and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. On the hill for Wilson will be RHP Chase Bebout (0-2), making his fourth start of the summer. For tickets call the Tobs box office at 252-291-TOBS.
