Lexington County Blowfish News Release

The Columbia Blowfish got a great start from John Long as they beat the Florence RedWolves 6-3 on Tuesday. It is the first time the Blowfish have finished a victory at Capital City Stadium since June 9 against Florence.

Long (2-1) threw seven innings of two hit baseball. He held the RedWolves (11-9) scoreless until the seventh inning when Travis Benn hit a solo home run with one down. Long bounced back to strike out the next two batters to give him seven strikeouts through seven complete innings.

After Benn cut the lead in half with his homer the Blowfish (6-14) offense responded. They loaded the bases with nobody out to chase starter Mitchell Knox (1-2). Brison Celek grounded out to first but drove in an insurance run before Carlos Santana blew it open with a two run single. An error by second baseman Blake Barber allowed the fourth run to cross and give the Blowfish the five run lead.

Greg Harrison came on in the eighth inning and struck out the first two batters he faced but an infield single and the third error of the day by shortstop Reggie Weatherford led to a two-run double down the right field line for Blake Barber, cutting the lead to three.

Harrison was able to record the final four outs without another run coming across and securing the victory for the Blowfish. Long and Harrison combined for 10 strikeouts on the night and held the Coastal Plain League's best hitting team to just three hits on the day.

The Blowfish have an off day Wednesday before beginning a two game series hosting the Morehead City Marlins on Thursday.
