Wilmington Sharks News Release

It took a few innings, but the Wilmington Sharks bats shook off the humid heat on Wednesday night as they exploded for eight runs in their final three at-bats to best visiting Catawba Valley 10-5.

The Sharks opened the scoring with two runs on three errors and no hits in the first inning before seeing Catawba Valley plate a run in the top of the second and then score three in the top of the third inning to take a 4-2 lead.

The visitors added what turned out to be their final run of the night in the fifth inning to push their lead to three before the Sharks got hot offensively.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Sharks sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs off of a variety of ways.

When the inning was over, the Sharks tallied only one hit in the inning, but saw runners reach via error, walk and hit by pitch. The sixth was highlighted by Emilio Pagan's RBI double and Russ Stupienski's bases loaded RBI walk.

The Sharks added two more runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by Kenny Bryant's leadoff double before he later scored and capped off the night's scoring when Alex Freedman singled with two outs in the ninth before Scott Coleman drove him home with an RBI single later in the inning.

Six Sharks had a hit in the contest, but Coleman was the only player to tally more than one hit with his 2-for-3, two RBI night at the plate. K.J. McAllister also drove in two RBI on the night as well, as 10 different Wilmington players scored the 10 runs on the night.

Catawba Valley was led by Tyler Reboulet's 3-for-5 night, while Todd Eskelin had a two-hit night with an RBI for the visitors.

Steven Richardson, the third of the Sharks five pitchers on the night, picked up the win after tossing a scoreless inning with two strikeouts, while Catawba Valley starter Dave Henderson was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs in five innings of work.

The Sharks jump back into CPL play Wednesday night as they host Fayetteville at 7:05. Wednesdays all season long are Miller Motte/Sunny 104.5 Kids Eat Free Nights, while the Sharks end their home stand Thursday night as they host Florence in a Fat Tony's Thirsty Thursday contest.
