Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, NC - Adam Giacalone pitched six innings, giving up six hits and three earned runs to give the Steamers a chance to win their ninth game in row. The Steamers offense was able to complete two different come-from-behind efforts to seal the 9-6 victory at Historic Hicks Field over the Outer Banks DareDevils on Tuesday night.
Giacalone, making his second start of 2011 ran into some trouble right out the gate against the DareDevils. In the top of the first with one out Jordan Keur reached base on an infield single. Chris Baker then reached on an error charged to third baseman Mitch Wells and Donnie Corsner obliged with an RBI single to put the DareDevils up 1-0 after just half an inning.
Outer Banks added two more runs to their lead in the top of the second inning after a fielder's choice put Mike Levine on first base with two out. Jordan Hankins brought Levine home with an RBI double to push the lead to 2-0 Outer Banks. Jordan Keur followed up the double with an RBI single and the scoreboard read Outer Banks 3, Edenton 0.
Joey Wendle hit his second home run of the season over the right field wall to plate the first run for the Steamers and cut the Outer Banks lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third.
Giacalone settled down and didn't allow another run over the next four innings he pitched for the Steamers. Nick Gaeta parked a Zach Smith pitch over the right field wall for a three run homer that gave the Steamers the 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Giacalone received a no decision for his six innings of work but left with a 5-3 lead after an RBI single by Brian Blasik in the bottom of the sixth added another Steamer run.
Jordan Egan emerged from the Steamer bullpen in relief of Giacalone to start the seventh and was greeted by a single off the bat of Wayne Hawkins. After a Levine fly out, Jordan Hankins walked and was put out at second base on a fielder's choice. On the play the throw to first went off the glove of Zach Stewart, the Steamer first baseman and allowed Hawkins to score to cut the lead to 5-4 Steamers.
Dustin Quattrocchi retired the three batters he faced and exited in the top of the eighth with two outs and the bases empty. Ethan Cole entered the game and hit a bump. A walk to Michael Thomas, followed by a single to Chris Reese and an RBI single to Wayne Hawkins tied the game at 5-5. A delayed double steal resulted in the go-ahead run scoring from third for the DareDevils and the Steamers headed into the bottom of the eighth trailing 6-5.
Outer Banks starting pitcher Zach Smith lasted 4.1 innings allowing six hits and four runs (two earned), he walked two and struck out three. Danny Martony pitched three innings and left in the bottom of the eighth with one out and runners on second and third. His bullpen would not hold the line for him and the DareDevils. Mike Torrence entered the game and surrendered two RBI fielder's choices, an RBI double and he threw a wild pitch to score a run for the Steamers, who took a 9-6 lead heading to the ninth.
Ethan Cole remained on the mound to pitch the ninth for Edenton. He gave up a single to start the inning and then induced a Chad Carman fly out to left field that Ryan Brenner made a nice catch on, and finally a double play ball to end the game.
Edenton improves to 15-4, the best record in the Coastal Plain League and they remain atop of the North Division with nine games left to play before the first half division winner is crowned. Outer Banks falls to 8-11, in fourth place in the North Division.
Cole picked up his third win in relief and Martony fell to 0-1 on the season. Edenton travels to Wilson tomorrow night to take on the Tobs, who have won eight of nine entering play today.
